📖 Commentary of Surah Ibrahim – Verse 39

39. All praise is due to Allah who has given me Isma'il and Ishaq in old age [89]. Verily my Lord is the Hearer of prayers [90].

✅ [89] Sons as a divine blessing, especially in old age

  • From this verse, it is evident that having children is among the great favors of Allah, especially when those children are pious, saintly, or Prophets.

  • Hazrat Ibrahim (عليه السلام) explicitly acknowledges the births of Isma'il and Ishaq (عليهما السلام) as divine gifts.

  • It is contrary to a believer’s dignity to be disheartened at the birth of a daughter, as every child is a bounty from Allah.

✅ [90] The significance of naming and trusting in Allah’s response

  • After praying for a son, Hazrat Ibrahim (عليه السلام) would repeatedly say, “Isma’il”, meaning “Allah hears”, which reflects his faith that Allah would answer.

  • When the child was born, he named him Isma’il, in remembrance of that prayer.

  • Historical context:

    • Hazrat Ibrahim (عليه السلام) was 99 years old at the birth of Isma’il.

    • He was 112 years old at the birth of Ishaq.

    • Isma’il was 13 years older than Ishaq (عليهما السلام).

  • Lesson: Never despair from the mercy of Allah Almighty—duas made with sincerity are accepted, even after long delays.

✅ Additional Guidance:

  • Begin and end all supplications with praise of Allah.

  • After completing a dua, say “Amin” or “O Allah, accept our supplication” as a seal of hope and trust.
