📖 Commentary of Surah Ibrahim – Verse 5

“And We sent Musa [Moses] with Our signs, saying, ‘Bring your people out of the darkness into the light [10], and remind them of the days of Allah’ [11]. Indeed, in that are signs for every steadfast and thankful person [12].”
(Kanzul Imaan Translation)

✅ [10] Prophets Remove Darkness and Lead to Light

This verse reaffirms that it is only the Prophets who are divinely appointed to remove people from layers of darkness—namely:

  • Disbelief

  • Heresy

  • Evil deeds

  • All forms of irreligiousness

The Qur’an uses the plural form “darkness”, signifying the variety and depth of spiritual obscurity.

The light, in contrast, is singular, indicating that true guidance lies only in faith. This transformation cannot be achieved without the assistance of Prophets, who are the true beacons of divine light.

✅ [11] Remembering the Special “Days of Allah”

This part of the verse gives rise to several key understandings:

  1. Holding religious lectures and gatherings on special Islamic occasions such as:

    • Meelad (Birth of the Prophet ﷺ)

    • Me’raj (Night Ascension)

    • Lailatul Qadr (Night of Power)

is highly commendable. These serve as reminders of Allah’s mercy, power, and blessings, helping the audience develop a connection with divine moments.

  2. “Days of Allah” refer to occasions of:

    • Divine punishment upon nations like ‘Ād and Thamūd

    • Divine favours like manna and quails to the Israelites

    • The drowning of Pharaoh

These days carry divine significance, as they manifest Allah’s power and mercy in different forms.

✅ [12] Signs for the Steadfast and Thankful

The true beneficiaries of these signs are those who are:

  • Steadfast (صابرين) in the face of hardship

  • Thankful (شاکرين) for Allah’s blessings

Ibn-Kathir

5. And indeed We sent Musa with Our Ayat (saying): “Bring out your people from darkness into light, and remind them of the annals (or days) of Allah. Truly, therein are Ayat for every patient, thankful (person).”

Story of Musa and His People

Allah says here, `Just as We sent you (O, Muhammad) and sent down to you the Book, in order that you might guide and call all people out of darkness into the light, We also sent Musa to the Children of Israel with Our Ayat (signs, or miracles).’ Mujahid said that this part of the Ayah refers to the nine miracles.

(Bring out your people) he is being commanded;

(Bring out your people from darkness into light,) call them to all that is good and righteous, in order that they might turn away from the darkness of ignorance and misguidance they indulged in, to the light of guidance and the enlightenment of faith,

(and remind them of the annals (or days) of Allah) remind them (O Musa) of Allah’s days, meaning, favors and bounties which He bestowed on them when He delivered them from the grip of Fir`awn and his injustice, tyranny and brutality. This is when Allah delivered them from their enemy, made a passage for them through the sea, shaded them with clouds, sent down manna and quails for them, and other favors and bounties. Mujahid, Qatadah and several others said this. Allah said next,

(Truly, therein are Ayat for every patient, thankful (person).) Allah says, `Our delivering of Our loyal supporters among the Children of Israel from the grasp of Fir`awn and saving them from the disgraceful torment, provides a lesson to draw from for those who are patient in the face of affliction, and thankful in times of prosperity. Qatadah said, “Excellent is the servant who if he is tested, he observes patience, and if he is granted prosperity, he is thankful for it.” It is recorded in the Sahih that the Messenger of Allah said,

(Verily, all of the matter of the believer is amazing, for every decision that Allah decrees for him is good for him. If an affliction strikes him, he is patient and this is good for him; if a bounty is give to him, he is thankful and this is good for him.)

(14:5) We indeed sent Moses with Our Signs, saying: “Lead your people out of all kinds of darkness into light, and admonish them by narrating to them anecdotes from the Days of Allah.”[8] Verily in it there are great Signs[9] for everyone who is patient and gives thanks (to Allah).[10]

Ala-Maududi

(14:5) We indeed sent Moses with Our Signs, saying: “Lead your people out of all kinds of darkness into light, and admonish them by narrating to them anecdotes from the Days of Allah.”[8] Verily in it there are great Signs[9] for everyone who is patient and gives thanks (to Allah).[10]

8. The Arabic word ayyam technically means memorable historical events. Therefore Ayyam-u-Allah (divine history) implies all those eventful chapters of human history which mention the rewards and punishments that were meted out to the great personalities and nations according to their deeds in the past ages.

9. Those historical events are signs in this sense that their proper and intelligent study provides proofs of the fact that there is only one God: and that the law of retribution is universal and is based absolutely on the differentiation between the knowledge and moral practice of the truth and falsehood: that this law also requires another world (the Hereafter) for its due fulfillment. Moreover, these events contain signs that serve as warnings against the evil consequences of building up systems of life on false creeds and theories, and help one to learn lessons from them.

10. Though these signs are always there, only those persons learn lessons from them who remain steadfast in trials and appreciate the blessings of Allah rightly and are grateful to Him. Obviously, frivolous and ungrateful persons cannot learn any lesson from these signs, even though they might grasp their significance.

(5) And We certainly sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring out your people from darknesses into the light and remind them of the days[650] of Allāh." Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.

[650]- Days of blessings bestowed upon the Children of Israel. Also interpreted as days of punishment and destruction of the former nations.
