Transliteration:( Wa iz qaala Ibraaheemu Rabbij 'al haazal balada aaminanw wajnubnee wa baniyya an na'budal asnaam )

35. And recall when Ibrahim submitted, 'O my Lord make this city secure (77) and save me and my sons from worshipping idols (78)'.

Surah Ibrahim Ayat 35 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

77. This means that Holy Makkah always remains a city and can never be deserted. This place should be a place of peace and security wherein no lepers, leucoderma, (associated with skin disorder). the Dajjal, and killing and plundering should infiltrate.

78. It is obvious that the word 'my sons' denotes progenitor i.e sons descended from the male sons who should all be safeguarded from polytheism. If it is taken to mean my total children, then it would mean my entire children should not indulge in polytheism.

In them believers too are found. Allah Almighty accepted this Dua of Hazrat Ibrahim (On whom be peace). Until the Day of Judgement, none of the descendants of the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم  will go astray.

These will always be believers because they are the children of Hazrat Ibrahim (On whom be peace). All Qutubs and Ghaus (highest among the Saints of Allah Almighty will always be Sayeds (Sewaique Muhriqah)

Ibn-Kathir

35. And (remember) when Ibrahim said: “O my Lord! Make this city (Makkah) one of peace and security, and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. 36. “O my Lord! They have indeed led astray many among mankind. But whoso follows me, he verily, is of me. And whoso disobeys me, still You are indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

brahim’s Supplication to Allah when He brought Isma`il to Makkah

Allah mentions here, while bringing forth more evidences against Arab polytheists, that the Sacred House in Makkah was established on the worship of Allah alone, without partners. He also states that Ibrahim, who establsihed the city, has disowned those who worship others besides Allah, and that he begged Allah to make Makkah peaceful and secure,

(O my Lord! Make this city (Makkah) of peace and security,) and Allah accepted his supplication. Allah said in other Ayat,

(Have they not seen that We have made (Makkah) a secure sanctuary.) ï´¿29:67ï´¾ and,

(Verily, the first House (of worship) appointed for mankind was that at Bakkah (Makkah), full of blessing, and a guidance for Al-‘Alamin. In it are manifest signs, the Maqam of Ibrahim; whosoever enters it, he attains security.)﴿3:96﴾ Allah said here that Ibrahim supplicated,

(O my Lord! Make this city (Makkah) a of peace and security, ) saying, “this city”, after he established it, and this is why he said afterwards,

(All praise is due to Allah, Who has given me in old age Isma`il and Ishaq.) ï´¿14:39ï´¾ It is well-known that Isma`il was thirteen years older than Ishaq. When Ibrahim took Isma`il and his mother to Makkah, while Isma`il was still young enough to nurse, he supplicated to Allah,

(O my Lord! Make this city (Makkah) a place of peace and security.) ï´¿2:126ï´¾ as we in explained in Surat Al-Baqarah. Ibrahim then said,

(and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.) It is proper for whoever supplicates to Allah to also ask for the benefit of his parents and offspring, as well as himself. Ibrahim next mentioned that many among mankind were led astray because of idols, and he disowned those who worship them and referred their matter to Allah; if Allah wills, He will punish them, and if He wills, He will forgive them. `Isa, peace be upon him, said similar words,

(If You punish them, they are Your servants, and if You forgive them, verily, You, only You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.)﴿5:118﴾ This supplication refers this and all matters to Allah, not that it is actually going to happen. `Abdullah bin `Amr narrated that the Messenger of Allah recited Ibrahim’s supplication,

(O my Lord! They have indeed led astray many among mankind.), and the supplication of `Isa,

(If You punish them, they are Your servants.) ï´¿5:118ï´¾ then raised his hands and said,

«اللَّهُمَّ أُمَّتِي، اللَّهُمَّ أُمَّتِي، اللَّهُمَّ أُمَّتِي»

(O Allah, Save my Ummah! O, Allah, Save my Ummah! O, Allah, Save my Ummah!) and cried. Allah said to the angel Jibril, “O Jibril, go to Muhammad, and Your Lord has more knowledge, and ask him what makes him cry.” Jibril came to the Prophet and asked him, and he repeated to him what he said (in his supplication). Allah said, “Go to Muhammad and tell him this; `We will make you pleased with your Ummah, O Muhammad, and will not treat them in a way you dislike.”’

(14:35) And call to mind when Abraham prayed:[46] “My Lord! Make this city[47] secure, and keep me and my sons away from worshipping the idols.

46. In the preceding (Surah Ibrahim, ayat 32-35), an appeal was made to the Quraish to be grateful to that Allah Who has bestowed so many bounties on mankind in general. But in this passage the same appeal is being made on the plea that Allah had bestowed His special bounties on the Quraish in particular. They have been asked to remember that Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) had settled forefathers of the Quraish near the Kabah and made their city, Makkah, a city of peace and Allah showered His blessings on the Quraish in answer to the prayer of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him). They have been admonished to remember those bounties and mend their ways.

47. Makkah.
