📖 Commentary of Surah Ibrahim – Verse 52

This is a message to mankind [111], so that they may be warned by it and know that He is only one God [112], and so that those of understanding may take heed [113].

✅ [111] The Purpose of the Qur'an

From this, two issues emerge:

  1. The entire Qur'an has been revealed for the purpose of propagation, so it is not permissible to conceal any verse. The message of the Qur'an is meant for all to hear, and it must be shared in its entirety.

  2. The Qur'an has been revealed for all of mankind and is not restricted to any special place or time. This is because the Prophethood of our beloved Prophet ﷺ is for all people, regardless of place or time.

✅ [112] The Proof of Tawheed in the Qur'an

This means the Quranic verses are the proof of the Oneness of Allah Almighty. Accepting Tawheed (the Oneness of God) from sources other than the Quranic verses is not sufficient for salvation. The Qur'an is the ultimate and most authentic source for understanding the Oneness of Allah.

✅ [113] The Qur'an as a Warner and Guide

From this, we learn that although the Holy Qur'an is a warner for everyone, not everyone will derive the fear of Allah Almighty from it. Only the fortunate ones will obtain admonition from it, while the wretched will remain bereft of it.

For this reason, "to deliver commands to mankind" is used at the beginning of the verse, and "men of wisdom may accept admonition" is used at the end. We further learn that any wisdom which helps to instill the fear of Allah Almighty is true wisdom in the real sense of the word.

Ibn-Kathir

52. This (Qur’an) is a Message for mankind (and a clear proof against them), in order that they may be warned thereby, and that they may know that He is the only One God and that men of understanding may take heed.

Allah states that this Qur’an is a Message for mankind,

﴿لاٌّنذِرَكُمْ بِهِ وَمَن بَلَغَ﴾

((So) that I may therewith warn you and whomsoever it may reach.) ﴿6:19﴾ This Qur’an is for all mankind and the Jinns, just as Allah said in the beginning of this Surah,

﴿الر كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَـهُ إِلَيْكَ لِتُخْرِجَ النَّاسَ مِنَ الظُّلُمَـتِ إِلَى النُّورِ﴾

(Alif-Lam-Ra. (This is) a Book which We have revealed unto you in order that you might lead mankind out of darkness into light.) ﴿14:1﴾ Allah said next,

﴿وَلِيُنذَرُواْ بِهِ﴾

(in order that they may be warned thereby), or to receive and draw lessons from it,

﴿وَلِيَعْلَمُواْ أَنَّمَا هُوَ إِلَـهٌ وَاحِدٌ﴾

(and that they may know that He is the only One God) using its proofs and evidences that testify that there is no true deity except Allah,

﴿وَلِيَذَّكَّرَ أُوْلُواْ الأَلْبَـبِ﴾

(and that men of understanding may take heed.) meaning those who have good minds. aThis is the end of the Tafsir of Surah Ibrahim, and all praise is due to Allah.

(14:52) This is a proclamation for all mankind that they may be warned by it, and that they may know that their God is none but the One True God, and that men of understanding may take heed.

Ala-Maududi
