📖 Commentary of Surah Saba – Verse 30

"Please declare: 'For you is the promise of a day from which you can neither remain behind for a single moment, nor can you go ahead [94] of it'."

✅ [94] The Certainty of the Appointed Time

This verse refers to the inevitable arrival of a destined day—either the Day of Judgement or the day of one’s death. Allah makes it clear that no one can delay or hasten its arrival, not even by a second. Every person has a fixed term set by divine decree, and no human effort, denial, or mockery can alter it.

Though human beings may try to control their lives through planning or interventions, the verse emphasizes that only Allah has the power to lengthen or shorten a life. The exception to this rule lies not in personal control, but in divine permission, sometimes granted through the supplications of righteous people. For example, Allah accepted the dua of Hazrat Adam (A.S.) and extended the lifespan of Hazrat Dawood (A.S.) from forty to a hundred years. Similarly, the lifespan of Iblis was extended through his own plea.

However, the core message here is to dismantle the arrogance and heedlessness of those who mocked the idea of accountability. Whether it is the final reckoning or one’s moment of death, the time is already written, and no soul can escape, delay, or pre-empt it.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Saba verse 30 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Saba ayat 28 which provides the complete commentary from verse 28 through 30.

(34:30) Say: “Your day is appointed, you can neither hold back its coming by an hour, nor hasten it by an hour.”[49]

Ala-Maududi

(34:30) Say: “Your day is appointed, you can neither hold back its coming by an hour, nor hasten it by an hour.”[49]

49. In other words, the reply means: Allah’s judgments are not subject to your whims that He should be bound to do a thing at the time which you have fixed for it. He carries out His designs only according to His own discretion. You cannot understand how long is mankind to be allowed to function in this world in the scheme of Allah, how many individuals and how many nations are to be put to the test in different ways, and what will be the right time for the Day of Judgment and summoning mankind of all ages for rendering their accounts. All this will be accomplished only at the time which Allah has fixed for it in His scheme of things. Your demands can neither hasten it on by a second nor your supplications can withhold it by a second.

(30) Say, "For you is the appointment of a Day [when] you will not remain thereafter an hour, nor will you precede [it]."
