📖 Commentary of Surah Saba – Verse 25

"Please declare: 'You will not be asked about our crimes [84] nor shall we be questioned [85] about your deeds.'"

✅ [84] Accountability Lies Separately

This declaration emphasizes the separation of responsibility. Even if the disbelievers label the Prophet ﷺ and the believers as being in the wrong, the verse firmly asserts: “You will not be held responsible for us.” It does not imply that the Prophet ﷺ committed any wrongdoing—instead, it reflects their false assumption, while reaffirming the Prophet’s innocence and freedom from sin.

✅ [85] Da’wah Duty Fulfilled

The believers, especially the Prophet ﷺ, had already conveyed the message. Whether the disbelievers accepted it or not is entirely their burden. This statement establishes a clear boundary: each group is answerable for its own actions. There is no mutual accountability—only individual responsibility before Allah.

This verse serves as a final notice, warning the disbelievers that the truth has been presented—and now, their response determines their fate.

(34:25) Tell them: “You will not be called to account about the guilt we committed, nor will we be called to account for what you did.”[44]

Ala-Maududi

(34:25) Tell them: “You will not be called to account about the guilt we committed, nor will we be called to account for what you did.”[44]

44. The about question had already made the listeners to think seriously, This additional sentence was meant to make them think even more seriously, as if to say, “It is in our own interest individually that we should consider and decide the question of guidance and misguidance rightly. For if we are misguided, we shall ourselves bear the consequences of our error; you will not be held answerable for it. Therefore, it is in our own interest that we should consider seriously, before adopting a creed, that we are not following a wrong way. Likewise, you also should think seriously for your own sake, not for our sake in any way, and make sure that you are not investing your life’s capital in a false creed. For if you committed an error in this regard, you would be harming only your own selves and not us.

(25) Say, "You will not be asked about what we committed, and we will not be asked about what you do."
