📖 Commentary of Surah Ar-Ra’d – Verse 28

"They are those who have believed and their hearts find satisfaction with the remembrance of Allah [79]. Behold, in the remembrance of Allah alone there is the satisfaction of hearts [80]."

[79] Remembrance of Allah — possibly referring to the Holy Prophet ﷺ

  • Some commentators suggest that “remembrance of Allah” here may also imply the Holy Prophet ﷺ.

  • As Allah says:

    • "Undoubtedly Allah has sent down for you an honour—the Messenger." (Surah At-Talaq 65:10–11)

    • And: "You are but an admonisher." (Surah Al-Ghaashiyah 88:21)

  • Through the Prophet ﷺ, the hearts of believers are guided and spiritually illuminated.

  • The Prophet ﷺ is the means by which humanity comes to know Allah and the origin of creation.

  • Thus, he is the source of inner contentment for those who truly love and follow him.

[80] Why remembrance brings contentment

  • There are two primary understandings of why dhikr (remembrance of Allah) brings peace:

    1. Sins cause anxiety, and remembrance leads to forgiveness, which calms the soul.

    2. The soul longs for its origin (Allah), and remembrance reconnects it, giving deep inner peace.

  • The heart, when distant from its true Master, feels like a foreigner in exile. Dhikr brings it back home.

  • Just as:

    • Medicine soothes illness,

    • Water quenches thirst,

    • Bread satisfies hunger,

    • Sunlight dispels darkness—
—so too does dhikr and love for the Prophet ﷺ dispel grief and spiritual agitation.

Even animals responded to the Prophet ﷺ

  • It is reported that even animals felt inner peace in the company of the Prophet ﷺ.

  • This highlights his universal mercy and calming presence.

Fear of Allah and contentment are not contradictory

  • Though believers tremble at Allah’s warnings, this fear itself becomes a source of tranquility.

  • As Allah mentions elsewhere:
    "And whose hearts tremble…" (Surah Al-Anfaal 8:2)

  • This fear purifies the heart from worldly fear, leading to peace and reliance solely upon Allah.
