Transliteration:( Wallazeena aatainaa humul Kitaaba yafrahoona bimaa unzila ilaika wa minal Ahzaabi mai yunkiru ba'dah; qul innamaa umirtu an a'budal laaha wa laaa ushrika bih; ilaihi ad'oo wa ilaihi maab )
And those whom We have given the Book [102] rejoice at what has been sent to you [103]. Some who deny a part thereof [104]. Say, "I am only commanded [105] to worship Allah and not to ascribe associates to Him. To Him, I call. And to Him is my return." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)
This refers specifically to those who had been granted knowledge of the Torah and the Injīl and, through this divine knowledge, recognized the truth and accepted Islam.
Among them was ʿAbdullāh ibn Salām (رضي الله عنه), a learned Jewish scholar who became a noble Companion of the Holy Prophet ﷺ.
This verse encourages joy at the revelation of the Qur’an. From this, we understand that celebrating the blessed birth of the Holy Prophet ﷺ and the night of the Qur'an’s revelation (Laylat al-Qadr) is beloved in the sight of Allah.
Spending these nights in remembrance and worship is a form of devotion and appreciation of Allah’s greatest blessings.
Some among the People of the Book accept only those parts of the Qur’an that align with their desires and reject the rest.
From this arise two key principles:
Rejecting even a single letter of the Qur’an equals disbelief in the entire Book.
Twisting the Qur’an to fit one’s personal views is infidelity. The proper approach is to shape one’s beliefs and actions to align with the Qur’anic guidance.
The Holy Prophet ﷺ is commanded to declare his exclusive devotion to Allah without associating partners with Him.
This also hints at the Prophet’s elevated status in matters of religious law — he is the source of divine instruction for the Ummah, even though some specific rulings may apply to him alone.
He embodies every principle of Islamic belief, and we follow him as subordinates to his divinely guided leadership.
36. Those to whom We have given the Book, rejoice at what has been revealed unto you, but there are among the Ahzab (Confederates) those who reject a part thereof. Say: “I am commanded only to worship Allah and not to join partners with Him. To Him I call and to Him is my return.” 37. And thus have We sent it (the Qur’an) down to be a judgement of authority in Arabic. Were you to follow their (vain) desires after the knowledge which has come to you, then you will not have any Wali (protector) or defender against Allah.
Allah said,
(Those to whom We have given the Book,) and they adhere by it,
(rejoice at what has been revealed unto you,) i.e. the Qur’an, because they have evidence in their Books affirming the truth of the Qur’an and conveying the good news of its imminent revelation, just as Allah said in another Ayah,
(Those to whom We gave the Book recite it as it should be recited.) ﴿2:121﴾ Allah said,
(Say: “Believe in it (the Qur’an) or do not believe.”) ﴿17:107﴾, until,
(Truly, the promise of our Lord must be fulfilled.) ﴿17:109﴾ meaning, Allah’s promise to us in our Books to send Muhammad is true. It is certain and will surely come to pass and be fulfilled, so all praise to our Lord, how truthful is His promise, all the thanks are due to Him,
(And they fall down on their faces weeping and it increases their humility.) ﴿17:109﴾ Allah said next,
(but there are among the Ahzab (Confederates) those who reject a part thereof.) meaning, `There are those among the sects who disbelieve in some of what was revealed to you (O Muhammad).’ Mujahid said that,
(but there are among the Ahzab (Confederates)), refers to Jews and Christians,
(those who reject a part thereof), meaning, `They reject a part of the truth that came down to you – O Muhammad.’ Similar was reported from Qatadah and `Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam. Allah said in similar Ayat,
(And there are, certainly, among the People of the Scripture, those who believe in Allah.) ﴿3:199﴾ Allah said next,
(Say: “I am commanded only to worship Allah and not to join partners with Him…”) meaning, `I (Muhammad) was sent with the religion of worshipping Allah alone without partners, just as the Messengers before me,
(To Him (alone) I call), I call the people to His path,
(and to Him is my return.) final destination and destiny.’ Allah said,
(And thus have We sent it (the Qur’an) down to be a judgement of authority in Arabic.) Allah says, `Just as We sent Messengers before you and revealed to them Divine Books from heaven, We sent down to you the Qur’an, a judgement of authority in Arabic, as an honor for you, and We preferred you among all people with this clear, plain and unequivocal Book that,
(Falsehood cannot come to it from before it or behind it: (it is) sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise.)’ ﴿41:42﴾ Allah’s statement,
(Were you to follow their (vain) desires), means, their opinions,
(after the knowledge which has come to you) from Allah, all praise to Him,
(then you will not have any Wali (protector) or defender against Allah.) This part of the Ayah warns people of know- ledge against following the paths of misguid- ance after they had gained knowledge in (and abided by) the Prophetic Sunnah and the path of Muhammad, may Allah’s best peace and blessings be on him.
(13:36) Those upon whom We bestowed the Scriptures earlier rejoice at the Book revealed to you, while there are also some among different groups that reject part of it. Tell them: “I have only been commanded to serve Allah and not to associate anyone with Him. To Him do I call, and to Him is my return.”[55]
55. This is in reply to a specific objection which was then raised by the disbelievers. They would say: If he has brought the same message that was brought by the Messengers before him (as he claims), why don’t the Jews and the Christians who are the followers of the former Prophets come forward and welcome it? The verse answers the objection and says that the true followers of the former Prophets really rejoice in the message of the Quran, but the false ones have been offended by it. Then it asks the Prophet (peace be upon him) not to worry at all about this, saying: O Prophet, you should not mind at all whether they are pleased or offended by it. Tell them plainly that this is the guidance I have received from my Lord and I will follow it at all costs.
