Transliteration:( Wa im maa nurriyannaka ba'dal lazee na'iduhum aw nata waffayannaka fa innamaa 'alaikal balaaghu wa 'alainal hisaab )
And whether We show you some of what We have promised them [113] or We cause you to die [114], then only the delivery of the message is upon you, and the reckoning is upon Us [115]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)
This refers to those punishments promised to the disbelievers — some of which were fulfilled during the Holy Prophet’s ﷺ earthly life, such as:
Defeat at Badr
Humiliation at Hunain
Other punishments occurred after his earthly life. The verse emphasizes that some divine promises are fulfilled in his lifetime, while others continue after.
Even after his departure from the world, the Holy Prophet ﷺ is still shown the events of the world.
However, the nature of this vision differs from the seeing during his worldly life.
Therefore, this verse cannot be used as proof to deny the Prophet’s continuous observation of the deeds of his Ummah up to the Day of Judgment.
This clarifies that the responsibility of the Messenger ﷺ is limited to conveying the message, not enforcing outcomes.
As for judgment and reckoning, these rest solely with Allah Almighty.
40. Whether We show you part of what We have promised them or cause you to die, your duty is only to convey (the Message) and on Us is the reckoning. 41. See they not that We gradually reduce the land from its outlying borders. And Allah judges, there is none to put back His judgement, and He is swift at reckoning.
Allah said to His Messenger ,
`(Whether We show you) O Muhammad, part of the disgrace and humiliation We have promised your enemies in this life,
(or cause you to die) before that,
(your duty is only to convey We have only sent you to convey to them Allah’s Message, and by doing so, you will have fulfilled the mission that was ordained on you,
(and on Us is the reckoning), their reckoning and recompense is on Us.’ Allah said in similar Ayat,
(So remind them – you are only one who reminds. You are not a dictator over them – Save the one who turns away and disbelieves. Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment. Verily, to Us will be their return, Then verily, for Us will be their reckoning.)﴿88:21-26﴾ Allah said next,
(See they not that We gradually reduce the land from its outlying borders.) Ibn `Abbas commented, “See they not that We are granting land after land to Muhammad ()” Al-Hasan and Ad-Dahhak commented that this Ayah refers to Muslims gaining the upper hand over idolators, just as Allah said in another Ayah,
(And indeed We have destroyed towns round about you.) ﴿46:27﴾
(13:40) (O Prophet), whether We make you see a part of the punishment that We have threatened them with come to pass during your life-time, or We take you away before that happens, your duty is no more than to convey the Message, and it is for Us to make a reckoning.[59]
59. This is to console the Prophet (peace be upon him), as if to say: O Prophet, you need not concern yourself as to the end of these disbelievers who have rejected the truth. You should go on performing with peace of mind the mission that has been entrusted to you and leave it to Us to give them suitable punishment. Though this has been addressed to the Prophet (peace be upon him), it is obvious that it is really meant to warn the opponents of the truth, who were demanding definitely from the Prophet (peace be upon him) by way of a challenge to bring about the scourge about which threats were being held out to them.
