Transliteration:( Wa najjainal lazeena aamanoo wa kaanoo yattaqoon (section 2) )
And We saved those who believe and remain pious [50].
This verse refers to the righteous followers of Prophet Salih (عليه السلام), who were saved from the punishment that destroyed the nation of Thamud.
According to Tafseer Roohul Ma‘ani, their number was approximately one hundred and ten believers.
The method of their salvation was that before the punishment descended, Prophet Salih was commanded to leave the area with his companions.
Only after their departure did the punishment strike — this shows that the presence of the pious acts as a shield against Divine wrath.
Allah mentions a similar concept in Surah Al-Fath (48:25):
"If they (the believers) had been clearly separated, We would have surely punished the disbelievers among them with a painful punishment."
This indicates that the presence of even a few righteous individuals can delay or prevent punishment from descending on an entire community.
Thus, the verse teaches two key points:
Faith and piety are the means of protection in both worlds.
The righteous are a source of mercy and safety for others, and their presence can avert collective destruction.
