📖 Commentary of Surah Fussilat – Verse 29

And the infidels shall say [75]: "O our Lord, show us those among the jinns and men who misled [76] us, that we may trample [77] upon them under our feet, so that they may remain amongst the lowest [78]."

✅ [75] The Cry of Regret in Hell

Once the disbelievers are cast into Hell, they will cry out with regret and anger, asking Allah to let them see those who misled them.
Although this is a future event, the certainty of its occurrence is so strong that it is expressed in the past tense to indicate its undeniable reality.

✅ [76] The Leaders of Misguidance

The request is directed toward two categories of misleaders:

  • From among jinn – particularly Iblees, who led mankind into disbelief and sin.

  • From among humans – such as Qabil, who committed the first murder, or other figures who spread corruption and falsehood.

Some scholars mention that Iblees and Qabil will be separated and hidden from the general inmates of Hell, indicating their special degree of disgrace.

✅ [77] Desire for Vengeful Humiliation

The disbelievers will ask to trample these misleaders under their feet, seeking to exact revenge for having been led astray.
This reflects their deep hatred and frustration, even though their own disbelief was ultimately a personal choice.

✅ [78] To Be Among the Lowest

By trampling them, the disbelievers hope to make those leaders of misguidance the most disgraced and humiliated in Hell.
The word "lowest" here means to be in the deepest, most dishonoured state—the opposite of honour and rank.

This verse teaches that:

  • Misleading others in religion is a grave crime.

  • The followers will not be spared blame, nor will they be satisfied with those they followed.

  • Both the misled and the misleaders will share in Hell’s torment, though in different degrees.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Fussilat verse 29 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Fussilat ayat 25 which provides the complete commentary from verse 25 through 29.

(41:29) There the unbelievers will say: “Our Lord, show us those that led us astray, both jinn and humans, and we will trample them under our feet so that they are utterly degraded.”[31]

Ala-Maududi

(41:29) There the unbelievers will say: “Our Lord, show us those that led us astray, both jinn and humans, and we will trample them under our feet so that they are utterly degraded.”[31]

31. That is, in the world these people were at the beck and call of their leaders and religious guides and deceitful devils, but when on the Day of Resurrection they will come to know where their leaders had led them, they will curse them and would wish that they should somehow get hold of them so that they may trample them under their foot.

(29) And those who disbelieved will [then] say, "Our Lord, show us those who misled us of the jinn and men [so] we may put them under our feet[1392] that they will be among the lowest."

[1392]- In the lowest depths of Hell. Or "that we may step on them" in revenge.
