43. Nothing will be said to you [O Prophet], except what was said to the Prophets before you [115]. Indeed, your Lord confers forgiveness and also awards punishment [116]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Fussilat – Verse 43

"Nothing will be said to you [O Prophet], except what was said to the Prophets before you [115]. Undoubtedly, your Lord confers forgiveness and also awards punishment [116]."

✅ [115] A Message Consistent Through All Prophets

This means that the objections and accusations made by the disbelievers against the Holy Prophet ﷺ are not new. Similar things were said to the previous Prophets, such as accusations of magic, madness, fabrication, and poetry. Hence, this verse provides consolation and assurance to the Prophet ﷺ — that he is not alone in facing such opposition.

The path of Prophethood has always been met with denial, mockery, and hostility, yet the truth has always prevailed in the end.

✅ [116] Balance Between Mercy and Justice

This highlights two attributes of Allah:

  • He is Forgiving — for those who repent and believe.

  • He is Severe in Punishment — for those who persist in disbelief and rebellion.

This verse serves as both a warning and a hope:

  • Hope for believers that Allah is Merciful and Forgiving.

  • Warning for disbelievers that they cannot escape His Justice.

Thus, the message is timeless, and the mission of the Prophet ﷺ is a continuation of the unified message brought by all Prophets — Tawheed (Oneness of Allah), guidance, and accountability.

Please refer to Surah Fussilat ayat 40 which provides the complete commentary from verse 40 through 43.

(41:43) (O Prophet), nothing is said to you but what was already said to the Messengers before you. Surely your Lord is the Lord of forgiveness[53] and the Lord of grievous chastisement.

Ala-Maududi

(41:43) (O Prophet), nothing is said to you but what was already said to the Messengers before you. Surely your Lord is the Lord of forgiveness[53] and the Lord of grievous chastisement.

53. That is, it is all due to His clemency and forgiveness that although His Messengers were opposed, abused and persecuted yet He went on giving respite to their opponents for years and years on end.

(43) Nothing is said to you, [O Muḥammad], except what was already said to the messengers before you. Indeed, your Lord is a possessor of forgiveness and a possessor of painful penalty.
