📖 Commentary of Surah Fussilat – Verse 42

"In which no falsehood can be inserted [113], either from its front or from its rear [114]. It is a revelation from the Wise, the Praiseworthy."

✅ [113] Divine Protection of the Qur’an

This verse establishes that falsehood can never infiltrate the Qur’an — neither externally through additions or deletions, nor internally through contradiction or corruption.

From this, it is evident that:

  • Every Companion (Sahabi) is truthful, trustworthy, and righteous.
Had they not been true believers, they would not have been entrusted with the task of compiling, preserving, and propagating the Qur’an.

  • Accusing the Sahabah of altering the Qur’an is disbelief, as it contradicts the Divine guarantee of protection.

Allah has appointed different groups to safeguard the Qur’an through the ages:

  • Huffaz (memorizers) protect its text,

  • Qaris preserve its recitation,

  • Ulama uphold its apparent meanings and laws,

  • And Awliya (Saints) reflect its inner, spiritual meanings.

Together, they form a divinely established fortress around the Qur’an, defending it from any corruption.

✅ [114] Guarded From All Sides

The Qur’an is:

  • Protected from distortion in the past or future,

  • Preserved in its exact wording, and

  • Shielded in meaning and implication.

While deviant individuals may attempt to twist its meanings, they will never succeed, because Allah Himself is its Guardian.

“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will be its Guardian.” (Surah Al-Hijr, 15:9)

This verse reaffirms the miraculous preservation of the Qur’an — a Book untouched by time, distortion, or doubt.

Please refer to Surah Fussilat ayat 40 which provides the complete commentary from verse 40 through 43.

(41:42) Falsehood may not enter it from the front or from the rear.[52] It is a revelation that has been sent down from the Most Wise, the Immensely Praiseworthy.

Ala-Maududi

(41:42) Falsehood may not enter it from the front or from the rear.[52] It is a revelation that has been sent down from the Most Wise, the Immensely Praiseworthy.

52 “Falsehood . . . . from before it” means that none can succeed in proving anything wrong or any teaching false in the Quran by making a frontal attack on it; “nor from behind it” means that nothing can be discovered till Resurrection which may be opposed to the truths and realities presented by the Quran; no new science, if it is really a science, can be propounded, which may contradict the knowledge contained in the Quran; no new experiment or observation can be made to prove that the guidance given to man by the Quran in respect of the beliefs, morality, law, civilization or culture, and economic, social and political life is wrong. That which this Book has declared as the truth can never be proven to be falsehood and that which it has declared as falsehood can never be proven to be the truth. Furthermore, it also means that whether falsehood makes a frontal attack, or makes a surprise attack by deception, it cannot defeat the message which the Quran has brought. In spite of all sorts of open and secret machinations of the opponents the message will spread and none shall be able to defeat and frustrate it.

(42) Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy.
