📖 Commentary of Surah Sad – Verse 23

"Surely, this is my brother [43], who has ninety-nine ewes and I have one ewe. Yet, he says: 'Give this one also to me [44]' and wants to dominate me with arguments."

✅ [43] Allegorical Representation

The term "brother" here is understood as either a religious brother or a hypothetical one, much like in legal examples (e.g., "Zaid gave divorce"). It was not a factual case, but a divinely inspired scenario meant to teach a lesson—thus, not bound by truth or falsehood.

✅ [44] The Underlying Message to Dawood

This story symbolically refers to Hazrat Dawood (peace be upon him), who had ninety-nine wives, and then proposed to a woman already pledged to another. Although permissible, Allah, in His wisdom, reminded him of the lofty rank of Prophethood, which demands extra care even in lawful matters.

This gentle divine reminder reflected not blame, but a call to higher spiritual awareness.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Sad verse 23 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Sad ayat 21 which provides the complete commentary from verse 21 through 25.

(38:23) Behold, this is my brother;[23] he has ninety-nine ewes and I have only one ewe.” And yet he said: “Give her into my charge,” and he got the better of me in argument.[24]

Ala-Maududi

(38:23) Behold, this is my brother;[23] he has ninety-nine ewes and I have only one ewe.” And yet he said: “Give her into my charge,” and he got the better of me in argument.[24]

23. “Brother” does not mean a real brother but a brotherin- faith and a member of one’s own clan.

24. To understand what follows one should note that the complainant did not say that the other person had taken away his only ewe and added it to his own ewes, but said that he was asking for it, and since he was a powerful person he had prevailed over him in the matter and he could not reject his demand, being a weak and poor man.

(23) Indeed this, my brother, has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe; so he said, 'Entrust her to me,' and he overpowered me in speech."
