📖 Commentary of Surah Saad – Verse 75

"He said: 'O Iblis! What from prostrating prevented you from before that which I made by My Own [130] Power? Are you boastful [131] that you consider yourself the exalted one?'"

✅ [130] Honour of Adam’s Divine Moulding

This verse highlights that Hazrat Adam’s (peace be upon him) body was shaped directly by Allah, not by angels. That’s why he is called Bashar—a creation formed by the Hand of Divine Power, making his human form noble in its origin.

✅ [131] Arrogance and Divine Questioning

Allah questions Iblis: was his arrogance a sudden act, or was he always prideful? This question is not due to any lack of knowledge, but rather to expose Iblis’s inner pride. It teaches us that Allah may question His servants, even while being All-Knowing, to clarify and manifest the truth.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Sad verse 75 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Sad ayat 71 which provides the complete commentary from verse 71 through 85.

(38:75) The Lord said: “O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating yourself before him whom I created of My Two Hands.[64] Are you waxing proud, or fancy yourself to be too exalted?”

Ala-Maududi

(38:75) The Lord said: “O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating yourself before him whom I created of My Two Hands.[64] Are you waxing proud, or fancy yourself to be too exalted?”

64. These words have been used to point out the honor, rank and glory bestowed on man by his Creator. In other words, Allah did not get man created through his angels but created him by Himself because his creation was a highly noble task. Therefore, what is meant to be said is: What has prevented you from prostrating yourself before him whom I have made directly Myself?

The words be-yadaiia (both hands) probably are meant to refer to the fact that this new creation combines in itself two important aspects of Allah’s power of creation: (1) That man has been given an animal body on account of which he belongs to the animal kingdom. (2) That on account of the Spirit breathed into him, he has been characterized with qualities which place him in honor and merit above all earthly creations and creatures.

(75) [Allāh] said, "O Iblees, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands?[1337] Were you arrogant [then], or were you [already] among the haughty?"
