📖 Commentary of Surah Sad – Verse 38

"And others bound [80] in fetters."

✅ [80] Chained and Subdued Jinn

This verse refers to the rebellious and harmful jinn who were captured and shackled by Hazrat Sulaiman (peace be upon him). These were not the jinn that served willingly, but those who were disobedient and posed threats.

From this, we understand:

  • Even though jinn are like unseen forces, created from fire and not normally under human control, they were fully subjugated by a Prophet through Allah’s command.

  • This shows the immense spiritual power Allah grants to His chosen servants, which even the rebellious devils cannot resist.

  • A parallel is seen in the era of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, when Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported capturing a devil—further affirming that divine authority can overpower even the most elusive of creatures.

(38:38) and others that were bound with chains.[38]

Ala-Maududi

(38:38) and others that were bound with chains.[38]

38. For explanation, see (Surah Al-Anbiya, Ayat 82); (Surah An-Naml, Ayat 17), (Surah An-Naml, Ayat 39) and the E.Ns thereof. The satans imply the jinns, and the satans linked in chains imply the serving satans, who were fettered and imprisoned as a punishment for making mischief. It is not necessary that the fetters and chains in which those satans were bound might be made of iron and they might appear as bound in them like the human prisoners. In any case, they were imprisoned in a manner that they could neither escape nor were able to commit further mischief.

(38) And others bound together in irons.
