📖 Commentary of Surah Sad – Verse 9

"Or, do they possess the treasures [16] of the mercy of your Lord, the Honourable, the Great Bestower?"

✅ [16] Prophethood as a Divine Gift

This verse is a rhetorical rebuke to those who question Allah’s decision in granting Prophethood to Muhammad ﷺ. It asks sarcastically: Do they control Allah’s mercy and treasures that they think they can decide who receives revelation?

Prophethood is a special favor, not something earned or acquired—it is entirely bestowed by Allah’s will. No wealth, lineage, or effort can demand it.

This also highlights an important distinction: Prophethood is always granted, while Sainthood (Wilayah) may be granted or acquired. For example, Bibi Maryam’s sainthood was purely gifted, while others achieve it through faith and piety, as reflected in the verse:
"Those who believed and keep up their duty" (Surah Yunus, 10:63).

Ultimately, Allah is the Honourable and the Great Bestower, and it is He alone who selects whom He wishes for His mercy and mission.
