    📖 Commentary of Surah Sad – Verse 39

    "This is Our gift. Now you do favor upon whom you like or withhold [81]. There is no account [82] of it."

    ✅ [81] Authority to Distribute Divine Bounty

    This verse declares that the kingdom and bounties granted to Hazrat Sulaiman (peace be upon him) were gifts from Allah, and he was given full authority to distribute them or withhold them at will. This indicates that Prophets do not act on personal desire, but with divinely authorized discretion.

    It also emphasizes that:

    • Prophets are custodians of divine blessings, distributing them by Allah’s permission.

    • The Holy Prophet ﷺ too is described as one who distributes bounties, as affirmed in authentic narrations.

    ✅ [82] No Accountability for the Beloved

    Allah declares that Sulaiman’s actions are not subject to accountability regarding this gift. This shows:

    • He was among the beloved and trusted servants of Allah.

    • His actions, in spending or withholding, were always within divine wisdom.

    • It also reflects that Zakat was not obligatory in previous nations as it became later, though charity was still encouraged for purification of the soul—as seen in the words of Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) in Surah Maryam (19:31).

    39. This verse can have three meanings: (1) This is Our unlimited gift: You have the authority to give of it freely to whomsoever you like and keep it from whomsoever you like. (2) This is Our gift: You may give of it to whomsoever you like and keep it from whomsoever you like, you will not be called to account for giving it or keeping it from the people. (3) Another meaning of it given by some commentators is: The satans have been placed entirely under your control: you may set free whomsoever you like and restrain whomsoever you like. You will not be held accountable for this.

    (39) [We said], "This is Our gift, so grant or withhold without account."
