Transliteration:( Maa kaana liya min 'ilmin bil mala'il a'laaa iz yakhtasimoon )
"What knowledge I have about the heavenly [121] world, which they had disputed [122]."
The Prophet ﷺ declares that his knowledge about the heavenly world—events that took place before the creation of man—is not based on history or worldly sources. Only through divine revelation could he be informed of these matters, which proves the truth of his Prophethood.
The “heavenly world” refers to the angels, and their dispute refers either to:
Their discussion with Allah (e.g., at the time of man's creation),
Or their discussion among themselves, such as over who gets to record or distribute certain good deeds of the believers.
According to Hadith, when Allah asked the Prophet ﷺ, “What are the angels disputing about?”, he replied, “Only You know.” Allah then blessed him with such knowledge that all matters between the heavens and the earth became clear to him. The angels’ dispute was about acts of expiation (kaffārat)—like remaining in the mosque after Salah, walking to the masjid, or performing wudhu in difficulty. These deeds purify one’s soul and improve both life and death.
