📖 Commentary of Surah Ar-Rum – Verse 32

"They are those who have split up [70] their religion and have become many sects. Every sect is happy [71] with what they have with them."

✅ [70] Splitting Up Their Religion

Here, "their religion" refers to their polytheistic beliefs, and "splitting it up" means that they are not united on any one belief.
Some believe in two gods, others in three, and others in even more.
In the same way, each sect has created its own religious laws, yet none agree on one system.

✅ [71] False Joy in Falsehood

This means that although all such sects are false, each one celebrates its own deviation, regarding it as truth, and in doing so, they deny the actual truth.
This verse does not refer to the differences of opinion among Islamic jurists—such as being a Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki, or Hanbali—because those are based on research, not selfish motives, and deal with subsidiary matters, not core beliefs.

Likewise, it does not apply to the differences among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, as the basic religion of all Prophets was one, though practices differed.
However, this verse does include sects that have crossed into disbelief, like the Qadyanis and Chakraldwis, who have shredded religion through innovation and falsehood.

The Prophet ﷺ had foretold: "My Ummah will divide into seventy-three sects. All but one will be in Hell."
Only the sect upon the truth—that adheres to the original teachings—will be saved.

Please refer to Surah Rum ayat 30 which provides the complete commentary from verse 31 through 32.

(30:32) those who have split up their religion and have become divided into sects, each party exulting in what they have.[51]

Ala-Maududi

(30:32) those who have split up their religion and have become divided into sects, each party exulting in what they have.[51]

51. This is an allusion to the fact that the real way of life for mankind is the same way of nature as elucidated above. This way of life has not evolved from a polytheistic creed to Tauhid as thought by those who invent a philosophy of religion on the basis of speculation. But, contrary to this, all the religions found in the world today have appeared because of the corruption of the original way of life. This corruption occurred because different people added their different self made creeds to the natural realities and created separate sects and everyone became a devotee of the additional thing, which was the basis of the separate sect, and gave up the original way of life. Now the only way of attaining true guidance is that one should return to the original reality which was the basis of the true faith, and rid oneself of all the later additions and excrescences and their devotees. If he still keeps any kind of contact with them, he will only be harming the true faith.

(32) [Or] of those who have divided their religion and become sects, every faction rejoicing in what it has.[1147]

[1147]- Of beliefs, opinions, customs, etc.
