📖 Commentary of Surah Ar-Rum – Verse 55

"And the day when the Hour shall be established, the culprits will swear, that they stayed only for an hour [123]. Thus they were turned away (from the right path)."

✅ [123] The Fleeting Nature of Worldly Life

On the Day of Resurrection, the wrongdoers will claim that their time in this world was but a brief hour. This can be understood in several ways:

  • The worldly life, when compared to the eternal Hereafter, is indeed fleeting and momentary.

  • From the perspective of those facing judgment, all past durations will seem short.

  • The short rest and pleasures of this world contrast sharply with the long-lasting hardships of the Hereafter.

In essence, this verse warns against pride in worldly comfort and pleasures, as they pass away quickly like a fleeting breeze. It also shows how the disbelievers will be confused and mistaken in their understanding of the true value and length of their worldly life on the Day of Judgment.

Ibn-Kathir

55. And on the Day that the Hour will be established, the criminals will swear that they stayed not but an hour — thus were they ever deluded. 56. And those who have been bestowed with knowledge and Faith will say: “Indeed you have stayed according to the decree of Allah, until the Day of Resurrection; so this is the Day of Resurrection, but you knew not.” 57. So, on that Day no excuse of theirs will avail those who did wrong, nor will they be allowed to return to seek (Allah’s) pleasure.

The Ignorance of the Disbelievers in this World and in the Hereafter

Here Allah tells us of the ignorance of the disbelievers in this world and in the Hereafter. In this world they worship idols, and in the Hereafter they will also display great ignorance. They will swear by Allah that they did not even stay for one hour in this world. They will mean that there was not enough time given to establish proof against them which would leave them with no excuse. Allah says:

(thus were they ever deluded. And those who have been bestowed with knowledge and Faith will say: “Indeed you have stayed according to the decree of Allah, until the Day of Resurrection…”) The believers who have knowledge of the Hereafter will respond to them, just as they established the proof of Allah against them in this world. When they swear that they did not stay even one hour in this world, they will say to them:

﴿لَقَدْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِى كِتَـبِ اللَّهِ﴾

(Indeed you have stayed according to the decree of Allah,) meaning, the Book of deeds,

(until the Day of Resurrection;) means, `from the day when you were created until the day you were resurrected. ‘

(but you knew not.) Allah says:

(So, on that Day) meaning, the Day of Resurrection,

(no excuse of theirs will avail those who did wrong,) means, their excuses for what they did.

(nor will they be allowed (then) to return to seek (Allah’s) pleasure.) means, they will not be allowed to return to this world. This is like the Ayah,

(and if they seek to please (Allah), yet they are not of those who will ever be allowed to please (Allah)) (41:24).

(29:55) (They will become aware of it) the Day when the chastisement will overwhelm them from above and from under their feet, and He will say to them: “Taste now the consequence of the deeds that you used to commit.”

Ala-Maududi

(30:55) On that Day when the Hour will come to pass[80] the wicked shall swear that they had stayed (in the world) no more than an hour.[81] Thus they used to be deceived in the life of the world.[82]

80. That is, Resurrection, which is being foretold here.

81. That is, from the time of death till Resurrection. Even if thousands of years might have elapsed since their death they will feel that they had gone to sleep a few hours earlier and then a sudden calamity had roused them from sleep.

82. That is, “They used to make similar wrong estimates in the world. There also they lacked the realization of reality, and therefore, used to assert that there was going to be no Resurrection, no life-after-death, and no accountability before God.”

(55) And the Day the Hour appears the criminals will swear they had remained but an hour. Thus they were deluded.
