📖 Commentary of Surah Ar-Rum – Verse 57

"But on that day, their excuses [126] shall not benefit the oppressors, nor will anyone demand them to please [127] Allah."

✅ [126] The Nature of Excuses

On the Day of Judgment, mere excuses will not help the oppressors. While repentance includes a sincere excuse accompanied by remorse and a promise not to return to sin, mere excuses without true repentance—such as claiming helplessness or external pressure—are insufficient. True repentance involves asking for forgiveness and a firm resolve to avoid repeating the sin.

✅ [127] Accountability on the Day of Judgment

On that day, no one will be able to intercede or plead to please Allah on behalf of the wrongdoers. Believers, however, may be granted leniency and forgiveness. Their accountability will be less severe, with possible forgiveness even after their sins are presented. But for the oppressors, excuses will have no benefit and no one will be able to help them before Allah.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ar-Rum verse 57 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Rum ayat 55 which provides the complete commentary from verse 55 through 57.

(30:57) So that will be the Day when the excuses of the wrong-doers will not avail them, nor will they be asked to make amends.[83]

Ala-Maududi

(30:57) So that will be the Day when the excuses of the wrong-doers will not avail them, nor will they be asked to make amends.[83]

83. Another translation can be: “nor it will be required of them to please their Lord”, because they will have lost all opportunity for recourse to repentance and faith and righteous acts, and wasted the time allotted for the test and reached the eve of the announcement of the result.

(57) So that Day, their excuse will not benefit those who wronged, nor will they be asked to appease [Allāh].
