Transliteration:( Ghulibatir Room )
"The Romans have been subdued [1]."
The Romans were Christians, while the Persians were fire-worshippers. Due to this, the Muslim believers desired the victory of the Romans, while the polytheists of Arabia supported the Persians. A sudden war broke out between them, in which the Persians defeated the Romans. This grieved the believers and delighted the disbelievers.
The disbelievers mockingly said, “Our brothers, the Persians, defeated your Roman brothers. If battle occurs between us and you, we will surely defeat you as well.” In response to this, this verse was revealed, informing that within a few years, another war would occur between the Romans and the Persians—and this time, the Romans would be victorious.
The verse serves as a reminder to the disbelievers not to rejoice over a temporary victory.
It should be noted that ‘Rum’ (Romans) is the plural of ‘Rumi’ (Roman). The Romans referred to here are descendants of Rum ibn Isa ibn Is’haaq ibn Ebrahim (peace be upon him). There are also other Romans who descend from Rum ibn Yunaan ibn Yafath ibn Nuh (peace be upon him). The Persians are the descendants of Faris bin Saam bin Nuh (peace be upon him). In this instance, the first group of Romans had been at war with the Persians.
