Transliteration:( Qul seeroo fil ardi fanzuroo kaifa kaana 'aaqibatul lazeena min qabl; kaana aksaruhum mushrikeen )
"Please declare, travel through the land and see [93] what was the end of those before you. Most of them died polytheists [94]."
By "earth" is meant the lands of the past nations who were destroyed due to Divine punishment. These were often passed by the Makkans during their trading journeys.
Here, "seeing" implies observing with insight, not merely gazing with the eyes. The purpose is to learn lessons from the ruins and fates of those who rejected the truth.
The word "majority" here refers to all, highlighting that most of the previous nations met their end while persisting in polytheism.
From this, we learn that travel undertaken with the intention of drawing lessons and fostering the fear of Allah is an act of worship.
Similarly, visiting the graves of saints to cultivate hope and eagerness for worship is also a praiseworthy act. This verse, therefore, supports journeys made for Ziyarah of sacred sites and attending Urs gatherings.
The tafsir of Surah Ar-Rum verse 42 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Rum ayat 41 which provides the complete commentary from verse 41 through 42.
(30:42) (O Prophet), say: “Traverse in the earth and see what was the end of those who went before you: most of them associated others with Allah in His Divinity.”[65]
65. That is, “The disastrous war between Byzantium and Iran is not a new thing of its kind. The past history of mankind is full of the accounts of the destruction of great nations. The root cause of the evils that caused the destruction of those nations was shirk which you are today being admonished to avoid.”
