📖 Commentary of Surah QAAF, Verse 14

"And the dwellers [23] of the woods and the people of Tubba [24]. Every one of them took the Messengers as liars, so the promise [25] of My punishment fell upon them."

[23] The Dwellers of the Woods

  • The dwellers of the woods refers to the people of Hazrat Shuaib (PBUH), whose settlement was located between jojoba trees. This geographical feature led them to be called "men of wood." A discussion regarding these people also appears in Surah Hajj.

[24] The People of Tubba

  • Tubba was a king of Yemen, known as Tubba Humairi. His detailed story is discussed in Surah Dukkhaan. The people of Tubba were those who followed him, and like other nations, they rejected the Messengers and thus faced divine punishment.

[25] The Divine Punishment

  • The verse indicates that the destruction of these nations occurred because they rejected the Prophets. It highlights a fundamental principle: no punishment is sent until the Prophet's message is rejected, no matter the severity of the people's sins.

  • The verse draws a comparison with the Pharaoh, who claimed to be God and was responsible for the massacre of 80,000 Israelite babies, yet Divine punishment did not come until he rejected the Prophethood of Hazrat Musa (PBUH). This teaches that rejection of the Prophet is the cause of divine retribution.
