📖 Commentary of Surah QAAF, Verse 43

"Certainly, We give life and cause death, and to Us is the return [73]."

[73] The Divine Authority Over Life and Death

  • The verse affirms that giving life and causing death is the exclusive function of Allah Almighty. Angels, while involved as intermediaries, do not have independent power in this process; they only act under Allah’s command.

  • This highlights that Allah is the sole Creator and Sustainer of life, and no one else has the authority to give or take life independently. Everything in existence is under the absolute control of Allah.

Divine Mediation and Human Dependency

  • This verse also suggests that the beloved servants of Allah, such as the Prophets and angels, act as the revealers of Divine works. Allah often conveys His commands through mediators like angels, even though He is independent and does not need intermediaries. This emphasizes the idea that if Allah, the Almighty, uses intermediaries in carrying out His will, then human beings—who are inherently weak—should also accept mediation and not try to act independently of it.

  • It is a lesson in humility: humans, despite their weaknesses, should not feel they are above accepting guidance and mediation in carrying out their duties, especially when Allah, in His infinite power, chooses to work through intermediaries.
