📖 Commentary of Surah QAAF, Verse 28

"He (Allah) will say: 'Do not quarrel [47] before Me, for I had already warned you of the punishment [48].'"

[47] The Infidels' Argument

  • On the Day of Judgment, the infidels will try to claim their innocence and argue that they were misled by the devil. They will try to shift the blame onto the devil for their actions.

  • However, the devil will refute their claims, and Allah will command both the infidels and the devil to keep quiet and be cast into Hell. This verse shows that no argument or excuse will be entertained on the Day of Judgment for those who rejected the truth.

  • While the infidels will not be allowed to argue with the devil, oppressed believers may present their case before Allah. The oppressed will demand justice, and Allah will grant them what is rightfully theirs. This reflects the fairness of divine judgment.

[48] The Warnings and Promises

  • Allah had already warned the disbelievers of the punishment they would face. Through the Prophets and the Books revealed to them, Allah conveyed His promises and warnings clearly. The infidels' punishment is the result of their rejection of these messages.

  • The verse emphasizes that the punishments are being mentioned because they are deserved by the disbelievers. The promises of reward and mercy were also conveyed, but the verse focuses on the punishment because the infidels have earned it through their actions.

Ala-Maududi

(50:28) (It was said): “Do not remonstrate in My presence. I had warned you.[35]

35. That is, I had warned both of you as to what punishment will be given to the one who beguiles and what punishment will be suffered by him who is beguiled. In spite of this warning when you did not desist from committing your respective crimes, there is no use quarreling now. Both, the one who beguiled and the one who was beguiled have to be punished for the crimes committed by them.

(28) [Allāh] will say, "Do not dispute before Me, while I had already presented to you the threat [i.e., warning].
