📖 Commentary of Verse 12 (Surah Al-Qari'ah)

"That We make it a reminder [12] to you, and that the retaining ears may preserve it [13]."

✅ [12] The Reminder of Important Events

In this verse, Allah emphasizes the importance of making significant events, such as the flood and the divine punishment, into reminders for people. The verse reflects that establishing the remembrance of these important events is beneficial, as it helps people to learn lessons and be guided by them. This idea of remembering and reflecting on past incidents is also a reminder to celebrate and reflect upon the birth of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), which is an act of virtue.

The practice of celebrating and reflecting on key spiritual moments has a profound impact on strengthening faith and reminding people of divine mercy and justice. The example of Hazrat Isa (A.S.), who prayed for a divine table to serve as a reminder for future generations, shows the importance of maintaining reminders of divine blessings and events.

✅ [13] Retaining Ears - Benefit of Reflection

The phrase "the retaining ears may preserve it" refers to those who listen to these stories and retain the lessons they offer. It suggests that the benefit of listening to the reminders of past events is not just in hearing them, but in remembering and reflecting on them. Only those who truly retain the wisdom from these stories will derive the greatest benefit—those who learn from them and apply the lessons in their own lives.

(69:12) so that We might make it an instructive event for you, and retentive ears might preserve its memory.[9]

Ala-Maududi

(69:12) so that We might make it an instructive event for you, and retentive ears might preserve its memory.[9]

9. The conscious ears: the ears which may hear it consciously and take it in. Although the word ear has been used, it implies the hearers who may hear the event and always remember it, take heed from it, and may never forget what dreadful fate the deniers of the Hereafter and the disbelievers of the Messenger of God would ultimately suffer.

(12) That We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be conscious of it.
