📖 Commentary of Verse 27 (Surah Al-Qari'ah)

"Would that had been my end [32]."

✅ [32] The Desire for an End to Escape Embarrassment and Punishment

In this verse, the disbeliever expresses a profound wish that they had died before facing the accountability and the embarrassment of their deeds. They long for a death that would have ended their existence, sparing them from the pain and punishment they are now facing on the Day of Judgement. This desire arises from the realization of their failures and the shame they will experience as they face the consequences of their actions.

This wish is born out of deep regret and humiliation, as they now understand the gravity of their misdeeds. The disbeliever would rather have not been resurrected at all, so they could escape the disgrace and punishment awaiting them.

Ibn-Kathir

(69:27) Oh! Would that the death that came to me in the world had made an end of me![18]

18. That is, I should have become extinct after death in the world and should have experienced no other life after death.

(27) I wish it [i.e., my death] had been the decisive one.[1743]

[1743]- i.e., ending life rather than being the gateway to eternal life.
