📖 Commentary of Verse 3 (Surah Al-Qari'ah)

"And what can make you realize what the Inevitable Reality is[1]?"

✅ [1] The Inevitable Reality - HAQQAH

In this verse, the Inevitable Reality refers to the Day of Judgement, which is also called HAQQAH ("The Inevitable Truth"). The word HAQQAH signifies that this event is not just a possibility, but an absolute certainty, a reality that will inevitably come to pass. It is not a vague or uncertain event; rather, it is undeniable and unavoidable.

The verse begins with a rhetorical question: "What can make you realize what the Inevitable Reality is?" This emphasizes that the true terror and dreadfulness of the Day of Judgement are beyond human understanding. No matter how much one might try to comprehend it, the magnitude of this event is beyond the limits of human comprehension.

The Revelation to the Prophet (PBUH)

Although this reality is beyond our understanding, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is informed of it through divine revelation. This distinction is important because while humans cannot fully grasp the terror of the Day of Judgement, the Prophet (PBUH) is given knowledge of it, not merely for personal understanding but for guiding the people. This teaches us that certain profound truths can be conveyed through divine means, even if they are beyond ordinary human perception.

Negation of Understanding, Not Knowledge

The verse uses the phrase "What can make you realize?", which negates understanding, not knowledge. This distinction is crucial. While humans can receive knowledge about the Inevitable Reality through revelation, the depth of its understanding—the emotional impact and the awe it should instill—is beyond human ability to fully grasp. It is not that the Prophet (PBUH) or the believers lack knowledge of it, but rather, the full impact of its terror cannot be fully understood by human intellect.
