📖 Commentary of Surah Yaseen – Verse 19

"They (Messengers) said: 'Your evil fortune [28] is with you. Is it that you are made to understand? No, you are a people exceeding the limits [29].'"

✅ [28] Misfortune Lies in Your Own Disbelief

The Messengers firmly replied that the real source of misfortune—like drought or suffering—was their own disbelief and disobedience, not the presence of divine guidance. The lack of rain was due to their sins, yet they wrongly blamed those sent to help them.

✅ [29] A Nation that Crosses All Bounds

The Messengers then rebuked them: rather than showing gratitude for being reminded of the truth, they responded with hostility and threats. This behavior showed they were truly a people who had exceeded all moral and spiritual boundaries, unable or unwilling to understand.

This verse highlights how people often blame others for their problems, when in fact, their own wrongdoings are the cause.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Yaseen verse 19 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Yaseen ayat 18 which provides the complete commentary from verse 18 through 19.

(36:19) The Messengers replied: “Your evil omen is with you.[15] (Are you saying this) because you were asked to take heed? The truth is that you are a people who have exceeded all bounds.”[16]

Ala-Maududi

(36:19) The Messengers replied: “Your evil omen is with you.[15] (Are you saying this) because you were asked to take heed? The truth is that you are a people who have exceeded all bounds.”[16]

15. That is, no one is an evil omen for another. Everyman’s augury is hanging around his own neck. If a person sees an evil, it is because of his own self; and if he sees a good, it is also because of his own self. We have fastened the augury of every man to his own neck. (Surah Bani-Israil, Ayat 13).

16. That is, you in fact want to avoid the good and you like the deviation instead of the guidance. Therefore, instead of determining the truth and falsehood by means of an argument, you are making these false pretenses on account of your superstitious whims.

(19) They said, "Your omen [i.e., fate] is with yourselves. Is it[1262] because you were reminded? Rather, you are a transgressing people."
