📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Anfal – Verse 32

"And when they said: 'O Allah! If this is indeed the truth from You, then send down upon us stones [65] from the sky, or bring us a painful punishment.'"

✅ [65] Arrogant Defiance Disguised as Confidence

This verse was revealed about Nadr bin Harith and his companions, who mockingly made this arrogant supplication to impress their followers. They falsely portrayed their stance as so certain, that they challenged Allah to punish them if the Qur’an was indeed true.

Their words were not sincere but a display of defiance, intending to undermine the truth of revelation and mislead others. Such hardened denial, even when truth is evident, reflects the depth of their pride and disbelief.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Al-Anfal verse 32 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anfal ayat 31 which provides the complete commentary from verse 31 through 33.

(8:32) And also recall when they said: ‘O Allah! If this indeed be the truth from You, then rain down stones upon us from heaven, or bring upon us a painful chastisement.’[26]

Ala-Maududi

(8:32) And also recall when they said: ‘O Allah! If this indeed be the truth from You, then rain down stones upon us from heaven, or bring upon us a painful chastisement.’[26]

26. These words were uttered by way of challenge rather than a prayer to God. What they meant was that had the message of the Prophet (peace be on him) been true, and from God, its rejection would have entailed a heavy scourge, and stones would have fallen on them from heaven. Since nothing of the sort happened, it was evident that the message was neither true nor from God.

(32) And [remember] when they said, "O Allāh, if this should be the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky or bring us a painful punishment."
