Transliteration:( Wa qaatiloohum hattaa laa takoona fitnatunw wa yakoonaddeenu kulluhoo lillaah; fainin tahaw fa innallaaha bimaa ya'maloona Baseer )
"And fight them until there is no more mischief [79], and the religion is entirely for Allah [80]. But if they desist, then Allah is All-Seeing of what they do."
This verse clarifies that the purpose of jihad is not to force conversion, but to end the power and influence of disbelief, which creates obstacles to the spread and practice of Islam. “Mischief” here refers to the authority and oppression of disbelief, not disbelief itself.
The goal is for religion to belong entirely to Allah—meaning Islam should have the freedom to flourish without obstruction. This is the justification for jihad: to defend truth, break oppressive resistance, and protect the right to practice Islam.
When disbelievers desist, either by peace, submission, or paying jizyah, warfare must stop. Allah is fully aware of all actions and intentions, ensuring justice prevails.
The tafsir of Surah Al-Anfal verse 39 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anfal ayat 38 which provides the complete commentary from verse 38 through 40.
(8:39) And fight against them until the mischief ends and the way prescribed by Allah – the whole of it -prevail[31] Then, if they give up mischief, surely Allah sees what they do.
31. This is a reiteration of the purpose, mentioned earlier in al-Baqarah 2: 193, for which Muslims are required to wage war. The purpose is two-fold. Negatively speaking, the purpose is to eradicate ‘mischief’. The positive purpose consists of establishing a state of affairs wherein all obedience is rendered to God alone. This alone is the purpose for which the believers may, rather should, fight. Fighting for any other purpose is not lawful. Nor does it behove men of faith to take part in wars for worldly purposes. For further explanation see Towards Understanding the Qur’an, vol. 1, (Surah Al-Baqarah, ayat 193) note 204-205.
[446]- Persecution. See footnote to 2:191. [447]- i.e., until polytheism is no longer dominant.
