📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Anfal – Verse 73

"And the disbelievers are allies of one another [165]. If you do not do this, there will be great turmoil and corruption [166] in the land."

✅ 165 Inheritance Bound by Religion and Nation

This verse highlights that disbelievers form alliances among themselves, but inheritance does not cross religious boundaries. A believer cannot inherit from a disbeliever, and vice versa. Furthermore, even among disbelievers, national and religious differences prevent inheritance—for example, a polytheist cannot inherit from a Christian, and an infidel from one country cannot inherit from one of another. The verse establishes that religious and national identity affects legal outcomes.

✅ 166 Unity Among Believers Prevents Chaos

If Muslims fail to support one another, allowing hostility and oppression to go unchecked, it will result in widespread corruption, insecurity, and unrest. This warning stresses the importance of Muslim unity—both in faith and action—to prevent the collapse of communal strength and the rise of chaos that would threaten the very existence of the Muslim Ummah.

Ibn-Kathir

73. And those who disbelieve are allies of one another, (and) if you (Muslims) do not do so (protect one another), there will be Fitnah on the earth, and great corruption.

The Disbelievers are Allies of Each Other; the Muslims are not their Allies

After Allah mentioned that the believers are the supporters of one another, He severed all ties of support between them and the disbelievers. In his Mustadrak, Al-Hakim recorded that Usamah said that the Prophet said,

«لَا يَتَوَارَثُ أَهْلُ مِلَّتَيْنِ، وَلَا يَرِثُ مُسْلِمٌ كَافِرًا، وَلَا كَافِرٌ مُسْلِمًا»

(No followers of two religions inherit from each other. Therefore, neither a Muslim inherits from a disbeliever nor a disbeliever from a Muslim.)

The Prophet recited this Ayah,

(And those who disbelieve are supporters of one another, (and) if you (Muslims) do not do so (protect one another), there will be Fitnah on the earth, and great corruption.) Al-Hakim said, “Its chain is Sahih, and they did not record it.” However, the following, from Usamah bin Zayd, is in the Two Sahihs; the Messenger of Allah said,

«لَا يَرِثُ الْمُسْلِمُ الْكَافِرَ وَلَا الْكَافِرُ الْمُسْلِم»

(Neither a Muslim inherits from a disbeliever nor a disbeliever inherits from a Muslim.)

Allah said next,

﴿إِلاَّ تَفْعَلُوهُ تَكُنْ فِتْنَةٌ فِى الاٌّرْضِ وَفَسَادٌ كَبِيرٌ﴾

(If you do not do so, there will be Fitnah and oppression on the earth, and a great corruption), meaning, if you do not shun the idolators and offer your loyalty to the believers, Fitnah will overcome the people. Then confusion ﴿polytheism and corruption﴾ will be rampant, for the believers will be mixed with disbelievers, resulting in tremendous, widespread trials ﴿corruption and mischief﴾ between people.

(8:73) And those who disbelieve. they are allies of one another; and unless you act likewise. there will be oppression in the world and great corruption.[52]

Ala-Maududi

(8:73) And those who disbelieve. they are allies of one another; and unless you act likewise. there will be oppression in the world and great corruption.[52]

52. If the words ‘unless you also help one another’ in the verse are regarded as a continuation of the preceding verse, they would mean that if Muslims do not support each other in the way, unbelielers do, this would give rise to much mischief and disorder in the world. However, if these words are considered to be connected with the directives embodied in (Surah Al-Anfal, ayat 72) onwards, their purpose would be to emphasize that the world would become full of mischief and disorder if the Muslims of Dar al-Islam (a) failed to help one another; (b) failed to provide political support and protection to the Muslims who have settled down in non-Islamic states and have not migrated to Dar al-lslam; (c) failed to help the Muslims living under oppression in territories outside Dar al-Islam when they ask for it, and (d) failed to sever their friendly ties with the unbelievers.

(73) And those who disbelieved are allies of one another. If you do not do so [i.e., ally yourselves with other believers], there will be fitnah [i.e., disbelief and oppression] on earth and great corruption.
