"And when the devil adorned their deeds in their eyes [111] and said, 'No one will overcome you today [112], and I am your protector,' then when the two armies confronted each other, he turned on his heels and said, 'I am free of you [113]. Indeed, I see what you do not see. I fear Allah [114].' And Allah's punishment is severe."
Satan beautified the evil actions of the disbelievers, making them feel confident and justified in opposing the Prophet ﷺ. He appeared in the form of a man and praised their strategy, emboldening them to proceed.
This shows that anyone who encourages sin or praises sinful plans—even if human—is a devil in essence.
On the day of Battle of Badr, the devil came in the form of Suraqah bin Malik, promising protection on behalf of Banu Kananah. He told them no one could defeat them and claimed, “I am with you.”
But when he saw the descent of angels, he fled.
This teaches that evil companions will abandon their followers at the moment of real danger. Their promises are hollow.
When Satan saw what the disbelievers couldn’t—the angels descending—he fled in fear, saying, “I have nothing to do with you.” He had brought them to the edge of ruin and then deserted them.
The devil’s words here expose his cowardice and treachery. He always deserts his allies when destruction looms.
Satan admits, “I fear Allah.” This shows that even Satan acknowledges Allah’s power, but mere fear without obedience is useless.
True faith requires fear combined with submission and worship. Even Satan’s fear could not save him from punishment.
