Transliteration:( Wa in tukazziboo faqad kazzaba umamum min qablikum wa maa'alar Rasooli illal balaaghul mubeen )
"And if you deny [39], then many nations before you have already denied. And the Messenger is not responsible except to deliver the message clearly. [40]"
This verse addresses those who reject the truth, reminding them that denial is not new—many previous nations, such as the people of Nuh, Hud, and Saleh (peace be upon them), also denied their messengers.
These past communities faced destruction as a result of their rejection, and the disbelievers of Makkah were also aware of these historical events to some extent.
The message here is: learn from history, for disbelief has always led to ruin.
The verse affirms that the sole responsibility of the Messenger ﷺ is to convey the message clearly and truthfully.
Guidance and acceptance lie with the individual. The Prophet ﷺ is not held accountable for whether people choose to believe or not.
Thus, people are reminded: accept faith for your own salvation—not for the benefit of the Prophet ﷺ, but for your own eternal success.
The tafsir of Surah Ankabut verse 18 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Ankabut ayat 16 which provides the complete commentary from verse 16 through 18.
(29:18) And if you give the lie (to the Messenger), then many nations before you also gave the lie[30] (to their Messengers). The Messenger is charged with no other duty than to deliver the Message in clear terms.”
30. That is, if you reject my invitation to Tauhid and deny my message that you have to return to your Lord and render an account of your deeds, it will not be a new thing. In the history of mankind many Prophets like Noah, Hud, Salih (peace be upon them) have also brought the same teachings, and their peoples denied them likewise. Now you may judge for yourselves as to whether they harmed the Prophets or only themselves.
[1129]- Commentators have differed over this verse - whether it is a continuation of the words of Prophet Abraham or words of comfort given by Allāh to Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ), which according to context seems more likely.
