📖 Commentary of Surah Al-‘Ankabut – Verse 68

And who is more unjust than one who forges a lie [163] against Allah or denies the truth [164] when it comes to him? Is there not an abode in Hell for the infidels [165]?

✅ [163] Forging a Lie Against Allah

There is no greater injustice than to fabricate a lie against Allah Almighty. This includes falsely claiming divine commands, distorting religious truths, or falsely attributing revelations. In this verse, the "truth" refers especially to the Holy Prophet ﷺ, as every word, action, and attribute of his is grounded in truth. He is the embodiment of truth—everything associated with him is true, and anything detached from him lacks authenticity. Even our sins, if linked to his mercy, would find forgiveness.

✅ [164] Denial of Manifest Truth

This also refers to those who denied the Prophet ﷺ despite his physical presence before them—as the people of Makkah did. It also alludes to those who turn away from his spiritual presence, which continues to illuminate the hearts of his devoted followers. Whether in physical form or through luminous spiritual influence, the truth brought by the Prophet ﷺ demands belief and reverence.

✅ [165] The Abode of the Disbelievers

The verse ends with a rhetorical question: "Is there not a place in Hell for the disbelievers?" Indeed, Hell is the destined abode for all disbelievers, though their punishment will vary according to the degree of their disbelief and their level of transgression.

(29:68) Who can be more unjust than he who foists a lie on Allah or gives the lie to the Truth after it has come to him?[106] Is Hell not the resort of the unbelievers?

Ala-Maududi

(29:68) Who can be more unjust than he who foists a lie on Allah or gives the lie to the Truth after it has come to him?[106] Is Hell not the resort of the unbelievers?

106. That is, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) has made a claim to prophethood, and you have denied him. Now there can be only two alternatives: If the Prophet (peace be upon him) has made a false claim in the name of Allah, there can be no one more wicked than him, and if you have belied a true Prophet (peace be upon him), there can be no one more wicked than you.”

(68) And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a [sufficient] residence for the disbelievers?
