📖 Commentary of Surah Al-‘Ankabut – Verse 66

So that they may deny what We have given them [159] and enjoy themselves. But they will soon know.

✅ [159] Ingratitude in Comfort

This verse highlights the ingratitude of the disbelievers who, after being saved by Allah, deny His favours and return to their polytheistic ways, indulging in the pleasures of worldly life.

It is important to understand that people fall into three categories:

  1. Those who remember Allah only in times of hardship,

  2. Those who remember Him only during comfort,

  3. And those who remember Him in all conditions—this last group is truly wise and sincere.

The polytheists mentioned here belonged to the first category—they would turn to Allah during crises, but once rescued, they would forget His favour and resume disbelief. Their enjoyment is short-lived, as the verse warns: “But they will soon know”—a clear indication of the coming punishment.

Ala-Maududi

(29:66) that they may be ungrateful for the rescue that We granted them, and that they may revel in the pleasures (of the present life).[104] Soon they shall come to know.

(66) So that they will deny what We have granted them, and they will enjoy themselves. But they are going to know.[1134]

[1134]- Grammatically, the verse may also be read as a threat, i.e., "So let them deny what We have granted them and let them enjoy themselves, for they are going to know."
