📖 Commentary of Surah Al-‘Ankabut – Verse 58

"And indeed, those who have believed and did righteous deeds, We will surely settle them in lofty chambers in Paradise, beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever [143]. What an excellent reward for the doers [144]." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

✅ [143] The Levels of Paradise

This verse confirms the existence of elevated ranks in Paradise, referred to as "lofty chambers". These elevated abodes are not random but are granted based on the extent of one’s faith and good deeds. The more righteous actions one performs in this world, the higher will be one's status in the Hereafter.

These chambers symbolize not only physical elevation but also honor and nearness to Allah, and they are eternal, with rivers flowing beneath, a description frequently used in the Qur’an to indicate divine comfort and endless reward.

✅ [144] The Reward for the Righteous Scholars and Others

The verse praises the reward as "excellent" for those who are active doers, indicating the importance of combining belief with righteous action.

According to the scholars, this verse hints that the Ulama (religious scholars) will enter Paradise through divine justice, i.e., based on their knowledge and deeds. By contrast, others, such as:

  • Minor children of believers

  • People with mental disabilities who died without action

  • New converts who died shortly after accepting Islam

  • Early believers who died before the full revelation of Islamic law

…will enter Paradise through Allah’s mercy and bounty, even without abundant deeds.

This highlights Allah’s fairness and compassion—reward is given both justly to those deserving and graciously to those excused.

Please refer to Surah Ankabut ayat 56 which provides the complete commentary from verse 56 through 60.

(29:58) We shall house those who believed and acted righteously in the lofty mansions of Paradise beneath which rivers flow. There they shall remain for ever. How excellent a reward it is for those who acted (in obedience to Allah),[96]

Ala-Maududi

(29:58) We shall house those who believed and acted righteously in the lofty mansions of Paradise beneath which rivers flow. There they shall remain for ever. How excellent a reward it is for those who acted (in obedience to Allah),[96]

96. That is, “Even if you remained deprived of all the worldly blessings because of your faith and righteousness and ended up as a total failure from the worldly point of view, you should rest assured that you will be compensated for it; and not only compensated but rewarded excellently.”

(58) And those who have believed and done righteous deeds - We will surely assign to them of Paradise [elevated] chambers beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers
