41. The examples of those who have made guardians other than Allah, is like the spider [101]. She has made [102] a house of cobwebs. And indeed, the frailest of all houses is the house of the spider [103]. What a good thing it would have been if they knew [104]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(41) The example of those who take allies other than Allāh is like that of the spider who takes [i.e., constructs] a home. And indeed, the weakest of homes is the home of the spider, if they only knew. (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Ankabut – Verse 41

"The examples of those who have made guardians other than Allah, is like the spider [101]. She has made [102] a house of cobwebs. And indeed, the frailest of all houses is the house of the spider [103]. What a good thing it would have been if they knew [104]."

✅ [101] False Friends and Guardians

This parable targets those who rely on idols or false deities instead of Allah. The verse calls out their misplaced reliance, likening it to befriending the enemies of Allah. In contrast, the true friends are the Awliya (Saints) of Allah, not false gods. The verse criticizes taking others as objects of worship or sources of divine help without Allah’s permission or command.

✅ [102] The Spider’s Web – A Flimsy Structure

The spider’s web is extensive in appearance, but in reality, it is fragile and vulnerable. It cannot protect from cold, dust, or harm—just as idol worship or false beliefs give an illusion of protection, but fail completely in times of need. A slight touch collapses it, just as false ideologies collapse under trial.

✅ [103] The Weakest of All Houses

Allah emphatically states that the frailest of all shelters is this web—having no foundation, no walls, and no strength. This is a powerful metaphor for the hollowness of associating partners with Allah. No support structure, no permanence, and certainly no ability to provide refuge.

✅ [104] If Only They Reflected

The disbelievers of Makkah turned to idols in ease, but when faced with hardship, they would call upon Allah alone. This reveals the inner truth of Allah’s supreme authority. Yet they failed to reflect and act accordingly in normal times.

This verse also affirms that asking help through Prophets or Saints, while firmly believing they are subservient to Allah, is not shirk. It's akin to seeking help from a means Allah has created, like going to the doctor for healing or to a court for justice. As long as the source is known to be Allah, the act remains within the boundaries of Tawheed.

Poets like Moulana Jami express this beautifully in their supplications to the Prophet ﷺ—not as divine beings, but as means to Allah’s mercy, which is firmly in line with Islamic belief.

Ibn-Kathir

41. The parable of those who seek protectors from other than Allah is that of a spider who builds a house; but indeed, the weakest of houses is the spider’s house — if they but knew. 42. Verily, Allah knows what things they invoke instead of Him. He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. 43. And these are the examples We give for mankind; but none will understand them except those who have knowledge (of Allah).

Likening the gods of the Idolators to the House of a Spider

This is how Allah described the idolators in their reverence of gods besides Him, hoping that they would help them and provide for them, and turning to them in times of difficulties. In this regard, they were like the house of a spider, which is so weak and frail, because by clinging to these gods they were like a person who holds on to a spider’s web, who does not gain any benefit from that. If they knew this, they would not take any protectors besides Allah. This is unlike the Muslim believer, whose heart is devoted to Allah, yet he still does righteous deeds and follows the Laws of Allah, for he has grasped the most trustworthy handle that will never break because it is so strong and firm. Then Allah warns those who worship others besides Him and associate others with Him that He knows what they do and the rivals they associate with Him. He will punish them for their attribution, for He is All-Wise and All-Knowing. Then He says:

﴿وَتِلْكَ الاٌّمْثَالُ نَضْرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ وَمَا يَعْقِلُهَآ إِلاَّ الْعَـلِمُونَ ﴾

(And these are the examples We give for mankind; but none will understand them except those who have knowledge.) meaning, no one understands them or ponders them except those who are possessed of deep knowledge. Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that `Amr bin Murrah said, “I never came across an Ayah of the Book of Allah that I did not know, but it grieved me, because I heard that Allah says:

﴿وَتِلْكَ الاّمْثَالُ نَضْرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ وَمَا يَعْقِلُهَآ إِلاَّ الْعَـلِمُونَ ﴾

(And these are the examples We give for mankind; but none will understand them except those who have knowledge. )”

(29:41) The case of those who took others than Allah as their protectors is that of a spider who builds a house; but the frailest of all houses is the spider’s house; if they only knew.[73]

Ala-Maududi

(29:41) The case of those who took others than Allah as their protectors is that of a spider who builds a house; but the frailest of all houses is the spider’s house; if they only knew.[73]

73. All the above mentioned nations were involved in shirk, and their belief about their deities was that they were their supporters and helpers and guardians, and had the power to make or mar their destinies. So when they will have won their goodwill by worship and presentation of offerings, they will succor them in need and protect them against calamities and afflictions. But, as shown by the historical events cited above, all their beliefs and superstitions proved to be baseless when their destruction was decreed by Allah. Then no god, and no god incarnate, and no saint or spirit, and no jinn or angel, whom they worshiped came to their rescue, and they met their destruction with the realization that their expectations and beliefs had been false and futile. After relating these events, Allah is now warning the mushriks to the effect: The reality of the toy-house of expectations that you have built on your faith in the powerless servants and imaginary deities, apart from the real Master and Ruler of the universe, is no more than the cobweb of a spider. Just as a cobweb cannot stand the slightest interference by a finger, so will the toy-house of your expectations collapse in its first clash with the scheme of Allah. It is nothing but ignorance that you are involved in the web of superstition. If you had any knowledge of the reality, you would not have built your system of life on baseless props. The fact is that none other than the One Lord of the worlds in this universe is the Owner of power and authority, and His support is the only support which is reliable. “Now whoever rejects taghut and believes in Allah has taken a firm support that never gives way. And Allah hears everything and knows everything,” (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 256).

(41) The example of those who take allies other than Allāh is like that of the spider who takes [i.e., constructs] a home. And indeed, the weakest of homes is the home of the spider, if they only knew.
