📖 Commentary of Surah Ghafir – Verse 19

"He knows the rebellious eyes [49] and what is concealed in the breasts [50]."

✅ [49] The Treachery of the Eyes

This part of the verse refers to secret sinful glances, particularly lustful looks cast at those whom it is forbidden to gaze upon. The "rebellious eyes" signify looking at others with bad intent, even if done stealthily.

According to Hadith Shareef, the first unintentional glance is forgiven, but if one continues to gaze deliberately, then it becomes a punishable act. The evil eye is not just a look—it can plant the seeds of desire and corruption in the heart.

This teaches that modesty of the gaze is not just social etiquette—it’s a spiritual responsibility. Allah sees even the glances of the eye that people assume go unnoticed.

✅ [50] Hidden Thoughts and Inner Intentions

Allah also knows what lies hidden in the hearts—whether it be evil beliefs, corrupt motives, or bad intentions. These concealed aspects of the self will also be subject to divine reckoning, if they were deliberate and sustained.

However, if a person entertains an evil thought unintentionally, or resists it without acting upon it, there will be no punishment. As Allah says:
"Allah places not burden on any soul but to the extent of his strength." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:286)

This verse confirms that Allah’s knowledge is complete and intimate—He sees not only what is done, but why it was done. Hence, both external actions and inner states must be purified to attain His pleasure.
