Transliteration:( Min doonil laahi qaaloo dalloo 'annaa bal lam nakun nad'oo min qablu shai'aa; kazaalika yudillul laahul kaafireen )
"Besides Allah?" They will say: They are lost [187] away from us, but rather we never worshipped [188] anything before". Thus, Allah leaves the infidels [189] confused.
On the Day of Judgment, the infidels will admit that all those whom they had worshipped besides Allah—be it idols, celestial objects like the sun and moon, or other deities—have vanished from them. These objects will offer no help or intercession. In fact, such things may even serve as tools of torment in Hell.
Their statement may have two interpretations:
Denial of their polytheism, claiming they never truly worshipped anything—perhaps to escape blame or punishment.
A realization of truth, meaning that what they had worshipped was in reality nothing—mere lifeless objects or concepts with no power. They acknowledge now that their previous devotion was baseless.
This line shows how Allah allows the disbelievers to fall deeper into confusion and misguidance, either as a result of their own persistent disbelief or because they clung to falsehood while rejecting the truth. Their condition on the Day of Judgment reflects their blindness in the world.

(40:74) associated with Allah in His Divinity?”[102] They will say: “We have lost them; rather, we never used to call upon anyone before.”[103] Thus will Allah cause them to stumble in error.
102. That is, if they really were gods or associates in Godhead, and you worshiped them in the hope that they would help you in the evil time, then why don’t they come to rescue you now?
103. They do not mean to say, we did not associate them with God in the world, but they mean: Now we have understood well that those whom we invoked in the world were nothing and mere nonentities.
