Transliteration:( Zaalika bi annahum kaanat taateehim Rusuluhum bilbaiyinaati fakafaroo fa akhazahumul laah; innahoo qawiyyun shadeedul 'iqaab )
"This is because their Messengers came to them with clear arguments, but they disbelieved. So, Allah seized [57] them. Surely Allah is Mighty and severe in punishment."
This verse explains the true cause behind the destruction of past nations: it was not random or due to natural decline—it happened because they rejected their Prophets, even after receiving clear and undeniable signs from them.
The Divine punishment does not descend without reason. It is specifically triggered when people knowingly deny the truth brought by Allah’s messengers.
A powerful example is given: Pharaoh (Firaun) of Egypt claimed godhood for four hundred years, yet he lived in health and prosperity during that time. However, he faced no punishment until he actively opposed Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him). Only then did Allah seize him and drown him.
This confirms that opposition to the messengers, not mere disbelief, is what invokes Divine wrath. Allah, being Al-Azeez (the Mighty) and Shadeed-ul-‘Iqaab (severe in punishment), intervenes with justice and power when His messengers are rejected.
This verse serves as a clear warning: rejecting divine guidance after it has been made clear is a direct path to destruction.

Please refer to Surah Muminun ayat 21 which provides the complete commentary from verse 21 through 22.
(40:22) They came to this end because their Messengers would come to them with Clear Signs[34] and yet they would refuse to believe. So Allah seized them. He is indeed Strong, Terrible in Retribution.
34. Bayyinat means three things:
(1) The clear signs which pointed to the Messengers’ being appointed by Allah.
(2) The convincing arguments which were a clear proof of their teachings being based on the truth.
(3) The clear guidance and instructions about the problems and affairs of life which could enable every reasonable person to see that such pure teachings could not be given by an impostor.
