📖 Commentary of Surah Ghafir – Verse 55

"Therefore (dear Prophet), be steadfast. Surely, the promise of Allah is true [139]. And ask forgiveness [140] for your (followers') from your Lord, praising Him in the morning and in the evening [141]."

✅ [139] The Certainty of Allah’s Promise

This verse reassures the Prophet ﷺ that Allah’s promise is unquestionably true. The promise includes:

  • Victory for the Prophet's mission

  • Dominance of truth over falsehood

  • Reward for the steadfast

Allah indeed fulfilled this through the spread of Islam and the defeat of the disbelievers, proving that perseverance leads to divine triumph.

✅ [140] The Prophet’s Intercession for His Ummah

Here, the Prophet ﷺ is instructed to seek forgiveness for his followers, which shows:

  • His responsibility and deep connection with his Ummah

  • That the Prophet’s role includes spiritual leadership and advocacy on behalf of the believers
This intercession is not as a matter of debt, but as a noble responsibility, like an appointed representative presenting a case.

✅ [141] Constant Praise and Remembrance

"Praising Him in the morning and in the evening" emphasizes:

  • The importance of regular remembrance (dhikr) throughout the day

  • Possibly a reference to morning and evening supplications (azkaar) or the five daily prayers

Also, just as in Paradise provision is mentioned as being "morning and evening", here too the phrase signifies constancy and devotion in worship, especially during times when angels of both shifts gather, recording the deeds of mankind.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Muminun verse 55 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Muminun ayat 51 which provides the complete commentary from verse 51 through 56.

(40:55) Be steadfast,[71] then, (O Prophet), Allah’s promise is true.[72] Seek forgiveness for your shortcomings,[73] and celebrate the praise of your Lord, evening and morning.[74]

Ala-Maududi

(40:55) Be steadfast,[71] then, (O Prophet), Allah’s promise is true.[72] Seek forgiveness for your shortcomings,[73] and celebrate the praise of your Lord, evening and morning.[74]

71. “Have patience”: Bear up with a cool mind against these hardships through which you are passing.

72. The allusion is to the promise made above in the sentence: We do help Our Messengers and the believers in the life of this world.

73. A study of the context shows that here “sin” implies the state of impatience that was being caused to the Prophet (peace be upon him) on account of the severe antagonism, especially the persecution of his followers. He earnestly desired that either some miracle should be shown, which should convince the disbelievers or something else should soon come down from Allah, which should quell the storm of opposition. Though this desire in itself was not a sin, which should have called for repentance, the high rank with which Allah had blessed the Prophet (peace be upon him) demanded great grit and will power; so the little impatience shown by him was regarded as inconsistent with his high rank. Therefore, he was required to ask Allah’s forgiveness for showing the weakness and was told to hold his ground like a rock as a man of a high rank like him should.

74. That is, Glorification of Allah with His praises is the only means by which those who work for the sake of Allah can get the strength to resist and overcome the hardships faced in the way of Allah. Glorifying the Lord morning and evening can have two meanings:

(1) Remembering Allah constantly and perpetually.

(2) Performing the Prayers at the specific times.

And in this second case, the allusion is to the five times of the Prayers, which were enjoined on all the believers as a duty some time after the revelation of this Surah. For the word ashiyy in Arabic is used for the time from the declining of the sun till the early part of nigh, which covers the times of the four Prayers from Zuhr to Isha, and ibkar is the time from dawn to the rising of the sun, which is the time of the Fajr Prayer. For further details, see (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 3, 43, 45, 238); (Surah Houd, Ayat 114); (Surah Al-Hijr, Ayat 98-99); Introduction to (Surah Bani Israil, Ayat 78-79); (Surah TaHa, Ayat 130); (Surah An-Noor, Ayat 56-58); (Surah Al-Ankabut, Ayat 45); (Surah Ar-Rum, Ayat 17-18), (Surah Ar-Rum, Ayat 31) and the E.Ns thereof.

(55) So be patient, [O Muḥammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin[1375] and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.

[1375]- What is intended is "fault" or "error" in judgement, since all prophets were protected by Allāh from falling into sin. The implication is that all believers should seek forgiveness for their sins.
