Transliteration:( Falam yaku yanfa 'uhum eemaanuhum lammaa ra-aw ba'sana sunnatal laahil latee qad khalat fee 'ibaadihee wa khasira hunaalikal kaafiroon (section 9) )
"But their belief was of no use to them when they had seen [214] Our punishment. This is Allah's Law, which is prescribed [215] to His devotees. And the infidels thereupon lost (all)."
This verse establishes that bringing faith after seeing the punishment of Allah is of no benefit.
Only those who believe in the unseen — before witnessing the punishment — have their faith accepted.
The people of Hazrat Yunus (عليه السلام) were an exception because they repented after seeing signs of punishment, not the punishment itself.
Thus, once the punishment or signs of death begin to manifest, the door of acceptance closes.
The Divine law is that faith declared after witnessing death, the angels, or punishment holds no validity.
If anyone’s faith is accepted after death, it is through a unique mercy of Allah and not due to general rule.
For example, it is narrated that the Holy Prophet ﷺ brought his mother back to life, and she believed and was accepted as a believer — a special Divine exception outside the standard law.
Thus, for the rest, the moment of death seals one's fate, and the disbelievers ultimately lose all due to their delayed repentance.

Please refer to Surah Muminun ayat 82 which provides the complete commentary from verse 82 through 85.
(40:85) But their believing after they had seen Our chastisement did not avail them. That has been Allah’s Way concerning His servants.[113] And the unbelievers courted utter loss, then and there.
113. “Allah’s established way”: the Law that repentance and faith are beneficial only till the time man is not seized by the torment of Allah or death. Believing or repenting after the torment has arrived or the signs of death have appeared, is not acceptable to Allah.
