📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Hajj – Verse 2

"The day when you would see it. Every suckling woman shall forget [4] her infant whom she suckled, and every pregnant shall cast away her burden, and you will see men as they are drunk [5] and they will not be drunk, but the torment of Allah is severe."

✅ [4] The Overwhelming Fear of the Hour

This means the fear of Qiyamah will be so intense that if there were any pregnant or nursing women, they would either lose their babies or forget them completely due to panic and terror.

However, it is established that forty years before the Day of Judgement, no new births will occur, hence there will be no pregnancies or suckling infants on that day.

But if the verse refers to the tremor before Qiyamah, at the rising of the sun from the west, then such pregnancies may still occur—so no clarification is needed in that case.

✅ [5] Apparent Drunkenness Due to Fear

The verse says that people will appear as if they are drunk, yet they will not be intoxicated.

Rather, due to the immense fear of Allah Almighty, people will be utterly disoriented and senseless.

From this terrifying condition, the special devotees of the Holy Prophet ﷺ are excluded.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Al-Hajj verse 2 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Hajj ayat 1 which provides the complete commentary from verse 1 through 2.

(22:2) On the Day when you witness it, the suckling woman shall utterly neglect the infant she suckles,[2] and every pregnant woman shall cast her burden, and you will see people as though they are drunk, when they are not drunk; but dreadful shall be Allah’s chastisement.[3]

Ala-Maududi

(22:2) On the Day when you witness it, the suckling woman shall utterly neglect the infant she suckles,[2] and every pregnant woman shall cast her burden, and you will see people as though they are drunk, when they are not drunk; but dreadful shall be Allah’s chastisement.[3]

2. This is to show the intensity and horror of the earthquake. At that time there will be so much confusion and terror that mothers will forsake their dear children at the very time they will be suckling them.

3. It should be noted that it is not meant to depict here the condition of the Resurrection but to impress upon the people the dreadful torment of the Hour in order to admonish them to mend their ways. This is supported by the subsequent passage.

(2) On the Day you see it every nursing mother will be distracted from that [child] she was nursing, and every pregnant woman will abort her pregnancy, and you will see the people [appearing] intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allāh is severe.
