Transliteration:( Afalam yaseeroo fil ardi fatakoona lahum quloobuny ya'qiloona bihaaa aw aazaanuny yasma'oona bihaa fa innahaa laa ta'mal absaaru wa laakin ta'mal quloobul latee fissudoor )

46. Have they not traveled in the land [102] that they should have hearts with which to understand or ears with which to hear? [103] Certainly it is not the eyes that become blind but the hearts (104) which are in the breasts. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(46) So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts. (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Hajj – Verse 46

"Have they not traveled in the land [102] that they should have hearts with which to understand or ears with which to hear? [103] Certainly it is not the eyes that become blind but the hearts (104) which are in the breasts."

✅ [102] Reflection Through Travel

  • This rhetorical question criticizes people who travel through ruined towns but fail to learn from the signs of destruction.

  • It highlights the importance of taking lessons from the fate of earlier nations.

  • From this, scholars derive the virtue of visiting Mazaars (graves of the righteous). Their beauty inspires piety and action, while visiting places of divine punishment creates fear of sin and accountability.

  • It encourages both hope through pious company and fear through witnessing consequences.

✅ [103] Blindness of the Inner Self

  • Disbelievers may have functional eyes and ears, but they lack insight and understanding.

  • True perception comes from the heart, not just physical senses.

  • The “eyes of the heart” are sharpened through:

    • Remembrance of Allah

    • Company of the pious

    • Recitation of the Qur’an

    • Voluntary hunger

    • Tahajjud prayer

    • Morning Istighfar

These spiritual practices cleanse the heart and restore its spiritual sight.

✅ [104] Inner Blindness Is the Real Loss

  • This verse explains: the real blindness is not of the eyes, but of the hearts within the chests.

  • It reinforces what was stated earlier: "You cannot guide the blind from their error." (Surah An-Naml: 81)

  • Here, "blind" refers to those who are spiritually blind, who reject truth despite seeing it.

This verse powerfully teaches that the root of disbelief is a dead heart, not a lack of physical ability.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Al-Hajj verse 46 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Hajj ayat 42 which provides the complete commentary from verse 42 through 46.

(22:46) Have they not journeyed in the land that their hearts might understand and their ears might listen? For indeed it is not the eyes that are blinded;[91] it is rather the hearts in the breasts that are rendered blind.

Ala-Maududi

(22:46) Have they not journeyed in the land that their hearts might understand and their ears might listen? For indeed it is not the eyes that are blinded;[91] it is rather the hearts in the breasts that are rendered blind.

91. The words “blinded are the hearts” have been used in the metaphorical and not in the literal sense. Since the heart is regarded as the center of emotions, feelings and of mental and moral qualities, these words have been used to imply that their obduracy has inhibited them from feeling and acting rationally.

(46) So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.
