📖 Commentary of Surah An-Nahl – Verse 27

"Then on the Day of Judgment, He will disgrace [52] them and will say, 'Where are My associates, whom you used to dispute about?' [53] Those who were given knowledge will say, 'Indeed, disgrace and misery are upon the disbelievers' [54]."

✅ [52] Disgrace Reserved for the Disbelievers

From this verse, two important rulings are derived. First, the punishment received by the disbelievers in this world will in no way lessen their punishment in the Hereafter. The punishment of the Hereafter will be separate, more severe, and eternal.

Second, although sinful believers may be punished, they will not be disgraced like the disbelievers. Their punishment will be carried out privately, in such a way that no one else will know about it. This shows Allah’s mercy and honor for those who have faith, even if they were sinful.

✅ [53] A Rebuke to the Idol-Worshippers

On the Day of Judgment, Allah will reprimand the disbelievers, asking them, "Where are My associates whom you used to dispute about?" This will be said sarcastically and in anger, referring to the idols and false gods they used to claim as partners to Allah.

It should be noted that this does not include Prophets and Saints, because true believers never regarded them as deities or partners of Allah. Rather, these pious individuals will intercede on behalf of their followers, by Allah’s permission, and will support them, not be a source of disgrace.

✅ [54] The Status of the People of Knowledge

The response, "Indeed, disgrace and misery are upon the disbelievers," will be declared by those who were given knowledge—this includes the Prophets, Saints, scholars (Ulama) of past nations, as well as the Ulama and Awliya of the Ummah of the Holy Prophet ﷺ.

This verse highlights the elevated status of the people of knowledge in both this world and the Hereafter, as Allah Almighty has honored their words by mentioning them in His revelation. It is a reminder of the honor and authority granted to the truly knowledgeable in Islam.

Please refer to Surah Nahl ayat 26 which provides the complete commentary from verse 26 through 27.

(16:27) And again, on the Day of Resurrection, He will bring them to disgrace, and say: “Tell Me, now, where are those to whom you ascribed a share in My Divinity, and for whose sake you disputed (with the upholders of the Truth)?” Those[23] who were endowed with knowledge (in the world) will say: “Surely today humiliation and misery shall be the lot of the unbelievers”;

Ala-Maududi

(16:27) And again, on the Day of Resurrection, He will bring them to disgrace, and say: “Tell Me, now, where are those to whom you ascribed a share in My Divinity, and for whose sake you disputed (with the upholders of the Truth)?” Those[23] who were endowed with knowledge (in the world) will say: “Surely today humiliation and misery shall be the lot of the unbelievers”;

23. There is a gap between this answer and the preceding question which has been left for the reader to fill. When Allah will ask: Now where are My partners, there will be dead silence in the plain where the entire mankind shall have to gather on the occasion of Resurrection. The disbelievers and the mushriks will be dumb founded for they will be at a loss to find an answer to this. Then those who had been given knowledge will make the assertion, “Indeed, disgrace, this day, and evil are upon the disbelievers.”

(27) Then on the Day of Resurrection He will disgrace them and say, "Where are My 'partners' for whom you used to oppose [the believers]?" Those who were given knowledge will say, "Indeed disgrace, this Day, and evil are upon the disbelievers" -
