117 .From this we learn that the Arabs would taunt a person in whose house a girl was born, because they would regard a girl to be worse than an animal. If the she-camel gave birth to a female off-spring they would not express any reproach or blame, but if a woman gave birth to a daughter they would express words of sorrow and reproach

118. So that he can make the daughter do menial work like looking after the domestic animals Or, it could mean that keep the daughter alive and become a source of disgrace among the people.

119. The infidels of the tribes of Mudir. Khiza'a and Tameem would bury their females alive

120. After regarding the daughter with so much contempt they were trying to prove them to be daughters of Allah Almighty. From this we learn that to link baser things with Allah Almighty is infidelity, eg lies, death, etc.

The tafsir of Surah An-Nahl verse 59 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Nahl ayat 56 which provides the complete commentary from verse 56 through 60.

(16:59) and he hides himself from people because of the bad news, thinking: should he keep the child despite disgrace, or should he bury it in dust? How evil is their estimate of Allah![52]

52. This attitude of contempt towards daughters has been mentioned to bring home to them the height of their folly, ignorance and impudence in regard to God. This is why they did not hesitate to assign daughters to Allah, though they themselves felt that to have daughters was a matter of disgrace for them. Besides this, it shows that they had a very low estimation of Allah, which had resulted from their ways of shirk. So they felt nothing wrong in ascribing such foolish and absurd things to Allah Who is above such things.
