📖 Commentary of Surah An-Nahl – Verse 47

"Or that He may seize [98] them gradually. Indeed, your Lord is Most Compassionate and Most Merciful [99]."

✅ [98] Four Types of Divine Punishment

Here, mention is made of four types of punishments:

  1. To sink into the ground,

  2. Destruction while living, like Qaroon on earth,

  3. Punishment during travel,

  4. And gradual punishment—where signs of destruction appear before the actual punishment descends.

The first three are sudden, while the fourth involves deliberate warning. The objective is to show:
“O you disbelievers, since you are always under Our control, why do you not obey Me and My Prophet ﷺ?”

✅ [99] Delayed Punishment Reflects Allah’s Mercy

For this reason, Allah does not send punishment quickly. If you are ready to repent, even now, Allah’s mercy is open and embracing.

However, you must also remember that the punishment of the One who is Most Kind and Most Merciful is very severe when He chooses to seize you. He will not release such a person from His grip.

Thus, the mention of these blessed namesAr-Ra'oof (Most Compassionate) and Ar-Raheem (Most Merciful)—alongside punishment is entirely consistent and deliberate.
